Hope Pro 2 Evo Freewheel Damage - Should I be worried?

Hi guys,

I took my cassette off to give it good clean, and was quite bamboozled as to why the cassette wouldnt come off the freewheel once the locking ring was removed. Turns out the cassette has chowed into the freewheel body (not sure of the proper terminology). Please see the photo attached (poor quality as a quick clean turned into darkness). Why did this happen? Was the cassette not fitted correctly, or is this normal wear and tear? My gut tells me to just keep riding like this (as the alternative is replacing this part). What do you think?

File off the barbs and inspect the wear. If its really bad consider replacing. It doesnt look too bad yet. Consider replacing with the steel freebody. Its heavier but less prone to this type of wear.

Looks like you've been using one of the cheaper cassettes with individual rings. The damage doesn't look too bad, so you could probably clean the gouges up with a file.

Solution? Either replace it with the Hope steel freehub body or use a more expensive cassette, one with the majority of the rings on a carrier. That way it won't bite into the freehub body.

As stated before, this happens to all freehub bodies.

When mine was really bad I used a dremel and a fine file to smooth it out as much as possible.

As Flippa said, also try use cassettes with a centralized alu spider

like so:

SLX and up for Shimano. Not sure which SRAM models.

It's the cheaper ones like this that do most of the biting:

Have phoned in to lbs to ask about the steel freebody - they are looking into it.

Interesting info, thanks. I will clean up with file. Are there any cassettes with all the gears on the carrier? Thanks for the info though

Nothing new. Don't worry
