Meet at Greenmarket Square at 6pm outside Cafe Sante for a leisurely ride

on Friday 31 October at 6pm.

off to Sea Point through the Green Point Urban Park,
then Sea Point Boulevard to the end and back to Greenpoint for refreshments.
In the spirit of Critical Mass everything is open to interpretation on the night.

We will be using cycle tracks and car free thoroughfares for most of the route.

Hang on chaps

The origional Critical Mass was always a last or first (can't recall) Friday of every month. It was a morning affair, sometimes small, sometimes large group, mostly hipsters, but for hipsters they were ok. The route was in traffic and was followed by coffee. The principle was to take over the street (to a large degree) and show a cycling force and promote commuting.

Then the moonlight mass came around, it became very popularized and all of a sudden people are buying #moonlightmass specific bikes ........ there was also a movement back then for a night criticalmass which in my mind lost what the CM was trying to achieve, but became more of a social gathering and not a ride with a purpose.

So where in the spectrum does this ride fall?

Does the traditional critical mass still run or did the Moonlight mass kill it?

had a look through my inbox. Found this one  - was organised by a well known ex hubber(lapsed at least). This was in the days before sponsors were required for monthly rides.

You all know what time it is!

That’s right it’s hammer time! Well, kinda, it’s actually Critical Mass time.

When:

This coming Friday the 27th of March 2009.

Where:

There are 2 meeting points, Point A being at the Baxter at 06:45, and Point B being at the CTICC at 07:15.

How:

Well, we ride our bikes from the Baxter go over the Mowbray bridge (Durban Road) then hook along Liesbeek Parkway into Lower Main road into town. Then we head down Adderley street until we get to the turn off for the CTICC, pick up the troops and continue our March through the waterfront, out the other side onto Beach road all the way to the border of Sea Point, then we head back into town along Main road Green Point and then all head off to work.

It got going like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass

And here we are on the international list: http://criticalmass.wikia.com/wiki/Cape_Town

Why:

Hmm, always the interesting question. Essentially what we’re hoping to achieve is to educate drivers that there is viable way to commute to work and that they don’t have to sit in their cars and be miserable all the way through to work. So, in this regard, we wear what we’re going to be wearing at work. Pretty simple idea, ‘eh? Also hopefully this helps get us on the radar for Southern Suburbs transport system, at this point there is a proposed cycling corridor from the North but not from the South.

Who:

Well, everyone, if you ride a bike it should be your duty to be there, if you want to make at least some sort of difference, even if it’s not huge at least it’s a start, it creates debate and it allows us to educate others that what we do is not only practical and better but pretty bloody cool to.

Right then, see you all on Friday then?

Send this out to anyone and everyone, whether they care or not.
