Santa Cruz frame failure..Update

Hey guys

Its more a frame failure as a result of a bolt failure. anyway...a mate was given a Santa Cruz blur xc by his BIL as a result of a catastrophic failure. His BIL was just going to strip off the components and give those to him and throw the frame away, but we told him to just get the whole thing as is.

So here it is

and this has happened:

As a result of this:

Reading on the net, this is not an isolated occurance and a lot of people recommend steel pivot bolts. So with it being a known fault, I was wondering if he (through his BIL) had any recourse to claim a new frame from Santa Cruz via wherever they bought it from

and....second prize...buy a new swingarm...or get the existing one repaired

interested to know others opinions

nice bit of kit to be handed...bust or not!

Fook me! That is not ideal. I'd suggest he contact the shop where he got it from (he will need proof of purchase) and/or Dragons Sports (the local distributors) to get some feedback.

that was my initial though - contact the shop and then see if its going to be an option following that route

edit - never done a frame claim so I am not sure at all what is involved...thats why interested to hear others experiences

SC has a 5 year frame failure warranty for first owner.  There might be a discussion regarding maintenance from them however they also have a lifetime crash assist program where they will provide parts at a "reasonable cost". This still likely means the cost of a cheap bicycle. I would contact them regardless if they replace you can save the money it takes to repair.

Next place the frame will fail is on the saddle post pipe. The saddle is out very far.

Sure there wasn't a crash? That bar end is sitting up at an odd angle.

true....although he says....he was just riding along.....

edit...but i also suppose the failure could result in a crash after the fact

Even if not covered by warranty, for the price of a replacement rear triangle you could get a pretty nice bike out of the deal.

The pic is not sharp, did that pivot bolt shear or did it just come loose?

Also, if you have no joy with the local connections, contact Santa Cruz international direct. They have a very good response time.

the dude is going to take it into minaars. It is apparently 6 years old so out of frame warranty - but he is going to look at the possibility of a carbon repair

Be interested to see how this pans out, repair from a reliable guy should be the ticket if you don't come right, apparently a well done carbon repair is stronger than before , just heavier.

yeah...carbon repair, new steel pivot bolts and bearings...if he can get that for +- 5k...thats a complete carbon cruz for roughly the price of that XT wheelset that it already has

I had the same failure the bolt sheared resulting in triangle breaking got mine fixed at a reduced cost by Mikes Bikes as a crash replacement claim
