Reduced import duty through gift card purchasing

I have heard a rumour that if you are given presents that are imported (purchased using gift cards or vouchers that import duty is reduced. Is this correct?

Depends on what you order. There aren't any duties on bike parts, just vat and a handling fee.

Clothing you get knobbed up to 40% duty, plus vat and handling.

I think the rand level of duty free gift is up to R3k per item. I could be wrong, but that's the figure I seem to recall relating to someone bringing or sending you a gift.

I got a collection notification from the SAPO. That says the gift concession relates to goods sent from a natural person to a natural person. The value may not exceed R400. 2 gifts are allowed per person per year. Proof of payment must be produced with the gift.
