I'm no car expert, but when I was shopping around about 18 months ago, my mate, who is a car expert, told me the Ford/Mazda 2.5 Turbo Diesel Intercooled engines are the best in the bakkie category. So I took his advice and bought one.

But I reckon Toyota must make a damn good bakkie engine too. Seen some seriously old models still going strong!

I know my mates BMW 320d has been at BMW more than he's been able to drive it. So I would not even consider it myself.

Audi are reputably fantastic with their diesel engines.

As are Toyota.

I just think our car market has gone crazy though. Its just so expensive these days.

Toyota Bakkie diesels are good but they they are heavy on fuel.

In terms of engine longevity, Isuzu is probably the best. Our company bought a fleet of 7 and every single one of them has done more than 500 000km. Thats the reason I own one now. They are definitely the best when it comes to fuel economy, this is due to the direct injection motor design. It makes them a little noisier, but its a bakkie for goodness sake.

Watching Top Gear, you learn that:

1.) Your Land Rover will fall apart,

2.) Your Audi A8 diesel will go 800 Miles on a tank and

3.) Your 1988 Toyota Hilux is impossible to destroy (Video 1,

As for diesels' date=' this time last year I bought a 2year old Land Rover Discovery, the Tdi whatever it was. What a load of rubbish. It broke down on the way from the traffic depot to the dealership!

But that's cuase it was the worst Landy ever made. It had nothing to do with the diesel.

I like how people complain with a white bread under the arm. "Oh crap, how am I gonna fill up my R300 000 diesel Sandton pavement crawler now that diesel is so expensive"

Probably the 2.5 non compensator..... They last....

Try the new 3.0 TDCi from Ford and Mazda, they also very light on fuel. I would like to trade my Ford 2.5 for one of those...

Came back from the Berg in Dec took it in for service and the transfer box needed an overhaul. Since it's still under warranty I took it to the dealer.

Jobs been finished ages ago, they're just awaiting authorisation on the warranty paperwork.

Meantime I drive their cars around, I'm on my fourth now Sleepy
