Hi there fellow hubbers.

I have entered the Cape Town Cycle Challenge ( mtb and road). We are thinking of going down by train.

Has anyone ever taken this route? My concern is obviously regarding my bike that will be out of eyesight for the duration of the journey.

Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Unfortunately I can't comment on how safe it would be....However my first reaction is don't do it! Broken components, missing kit etc.....If stuff can go missing in the 1 hour before a flight . imagine what will display over a multi hour train ride where I'd assume they'd have access to that carriage.....Please do post back on what happens as it does sound like it could be a fun trip.

There is a lady by the name of Sue Coetzee that orgonaises train trips from JHB to CPT specifically for the Cycle tour. All inclusive, I have only heard positive things from people that has been on the train to CPT.

I have a friend that does it every year. Bikes are safe and he says it is an awesome comfortable trip down!

All the bikes get stored in a seperate compartment. I will Pm you my friends details that uses it every year. You can talk to him. He has a R100k plus Bianchi and he is not concerned.

I'm look at organising a 28-seater bus, air fares are just silly. Will deliver and collect bikes in CT.

Leave Thursday afternoon, Rosebank Jhb to arrive Friday am, leaving CT Monday am, to arrive Monday evening. Bikes to follow, will deliver.

Let me know via pm if anyone would be interested.

Must say, a train trip sounds infinitely more fun and safer than an overnight bus in SA. If organised well, the train can be awesome. Sleep in a bed, walk around, eat a proper meal, see the countryside. Something romantic about train rides (the non-Metro cattle truck ones).

Except the train is  slow, very slow, and  keep stopping in the middle of nowhere, service sux, it takes at least 36 hours (even when everything worked)  GRIM bro GRIM, and I enjoy a good train journey, long distant train travel in SA is not an option, unless its private, even then its going to be slow.

Think of a small luxury bus, with toilet and bar etc TB's of cycling vids on tap, WiFi, bikes looked after and safe....

If you are going down for a week how are you going to get around?

Drive down

Or fly, hire a car and send your bikes down with one of the multitude of companies that transport bikes for the Argus

All pretty straight forward

Flying is cheaper than driving
