BaGearA Posted November 18, 2014 Share hi guys i want o order a set of WTB KOM's the i23 now tey say the internal width is 23mm WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??and also what is the thickness of the rim form lip to lip("external width") thanks for the help
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted November 18, 2014 Share It means the distance between the 2 flanges of the rim. That's it. So if you take a ruler, and put it across the rim, and measure from side to side on the inside of the rim, that's Internal Rim Width. External rim width is exactly the same, except measured from outer edge to outer edge. Outer rim width is always 4 to 6mm bigger than internal width, due to the size of the rim walls. Bigger rim width = more stability for the tire (not as pinched by the rim) = more sidewall rigidity = lower running pressures = more grip = FUN!!! MrJacques Posted November 18, 2014 Share This is for a different rim, but I hope the pic will help: 26 = External21 = Internal23 = Height / Depth
NukeproofPeanut Posted November 18, 2014 Share Basically what armpies said. Most people worry more about the internal width than external as this determines the tyre profile. You'll find that generally narrower rims like the i19 are more XC focused, where the i25 is more All mountain/DH focused.
