Looking at the histograms it looks like its a 5 min poll interval with a data push if there is cell coverage. It changed a little in some of the areas close to mountains which Im assuming affected cell coverage.

Those average speeds are going to climb quickly for GU over the next bit.

Only able to catch up now. No cell signals where they are. Maybe around the towns, but once you get over the first hill out of Sutherland nothing. Down in the Tankwa Karoo, nothing. Been like that most of the ride. The spot trackers are using satellite technology, not just for determining position, but for comms coverage too.

Toughest decision I have ever had to make I think. My @TheMungaMTB is over. 42 degrees and vomiting don't mix. Sorry guys. Heartbroken.

Mine is not a calculation at all it's just based on what the X axis on the speed distance plot says for the athlete. I'm working on the assumption that the tracker measured the distance traveled. It could be that the software does not measure when you backtrack along the route you've come  so if I multiple my distance by 2 it gives me an extra distance not too far off from yours.  I guess we'll only know at the end.

Like the rule of thumb method. Google maps makes it 67.5km each way for the detour, total 134km.

Race withdrawal:
24.1. If a rider elects to withdraw from the Race due to medical reasons and
is unable to continue to a Race station, the rider must notify either
the Race organizer or someone from the medial team and a vehicle
will be dispatched to collect the rider and transport him to the
nearest Race station. This vehicle will only carry the rider requiring
medical attention. Alternatively, the rider requiring medical attention
needs to push the SOS button on his tracking device which will action
an emergency vehicle being dispatched to the GPS location of the
rider. On pushing this SOS button the rider will no longer be able to
continue in the Race.
24.2. If a rider wishes to withdraw from the Race for reasons other than
medical, he can only make this decision at a Race station.

Maybe that is why they withdraw at a race station ....
