If someone is looking for a set of cantilever brakes for a build - I have a set of XT cantilevers still in very good condition - levers and brakes to go as a set.

Hi, here’s some things I did to my cross/commuter …

and a pic of my baby. Here in the office with me as I use her for my daily commute

I have a customized Ridgeback Flight 03 ... :)

My roadbike has a Campagnolo groupset, (I recently changed from Shimano to Campagnolo) and to get use to the different shifters, I decided to add road bars with Campagnolo shifters and groupset to the Ridgeback too. I’m also still getting use to the ISM Adamo seat and decided to fit a cheapy shock seatpost to take the harshness out initially.

Having road bars on the Ridgeback is great.

I’m still looking at upgrading the wheels and the crank-set, but other than that she rides like a dream and eat up the road between Newlands and the CBD. Also a lot of fun over the weekends ….

I run Continental TravelContact tyres, which is good for the pavements, especially on the way home in the afternoons when the vehicles start pushing you of the road.

I changed to a BB7 road disc calliper at the front to work with the shifters. And have an old Tektro cable actuated disc calliper at the rear. They work extremely well.

I initially thought that removing the hydraulic brakes was not a good idea, but the cable actuated BB7’s is amazing, and the Tekro in the rear is more than enough as I start skidding quickly when touching the rear brakes.

And then my greatest enhancement was the bell ….. to let the pedestrians know I’m coming as they J-walk between the vehicles ..   :)

Really awesome build and neat looking bike.

Yeah that looks great!

thanks, not sure just yet what wheels to get .... does not have to be light .... but want a good hub-set

With cross-bikes I think the idea is to get something that will be able to withstand the roughness of the off-road terrain but also give you good rolling on the flats?

Eddie what wheels are you using currently ?

It's Shimano M495A hubs on Alexrims DP17, ..... they came with the bike, I don't know whether it was the original wheels as I bought the bike 2nd-hand

I would love to build a set with XTR hubs ...

I have a Ambrosio 10 speed Cassette that fits on the shimano freehub, but is Campagnolo groupset specific. (Spacing of cassette cogs between Shimano and Campagnolo is fractionaly different)

Thus, with using the Ambrosio shimano/Campy cassette I don't have to build a disc wheel with a Campagnolo freehub (if such a hub exist)    :)

also Sram RD Force ,shimano cassette with Campy levers works fine

and so it begins  ..... have to learn everything about wheels and tyres   ...... especially if wanting to fit disc brakes.

so if I understand things correctly I am looking for mountain bike rims, that are narrow enough to take 28c tyre ? like crests maybe ... hey Ryan.. :whistling:

Why 28? I have 35's on road wheels on mine? 700 x 35 is the future...

like i said steep learning curve........

wanting to use disc brakes, so looking at a mtn bike wheel set.

getting into the debate with myself about which wheel will be faster on the road.

Over an audax distance of 600km I need as much help as I can get, so trying to figure out lowest rolling resistance but best comfort for long riding.

I sound like such a fairy - one would never think I pedalled a mtn bike 350 odd km's through the Namibian desert in under 22 hrs

I would say disc brakes with mtb wheels.
