Wow, what a mouthful.

Hi again fellow hubbers. I recently acquired a Shimano Deore XT 10 speed, tripple crank from a fellow hubber...my problem is, I saw the price and jumped. I didn't do my homework as I usually do.

Now my dilemma.. I did not know there is another standard other thac 104 BCD for the middle chain ring. Thus when wanting to fir my Kitted narrow wide chainring to it, surprise surprise, it was to big. Seems that the Deore crank has a 96 BCD??

I am planning to use the crank on a single speed build project I am busy with. What do you suggest I do to use this crank as a single speed crank. The current gears on the crank is 40/30/22.

Any good input will be appreciated.

Many thanx

Get yourself a 96bcd NW chainring and sell the other one or just sell the crank and get the one you want.

Easy mistake you made, most XT Cranksets are 104 (M780) but some are 96 (M782), not sure why. Maybe to allow for the smaller 40/30 ratio chainrings.

Cant seem to find a 96 BCD Narrow wide on the online stores I frequent..thinking of drawing a gear in autocad and having it lazercut + anodized maybe?

Get a narrow wide chainring from Rapide. Then sell the chainrings on the crank.

Here's my 3× Crank

Where can I find one of those? I tried Cris willemse, Buy Cycle, Dialedbikes and Evo Bikes?

*edit* misread - your running an XT.  I thought XT was 104 bcd..... I'm busy with a kitted conversion onto an XT crank at the moment....

I did exactly the same thing a while ago. Ended up selling the XT crank to a mate who wanted to 3 x10. 96 bcd is almost impossible to find. I looked everywhere. I did hear that wolftooth does one. but I couldn't find one locally. Good luck, hope you come right.

Wel..I bought a Deore XT thinking its 104...

Flip. Gonna check in with my LBS, I've just done exactly what you have. That SLX was off a double crank, my XT is a triple.

*edit* - confirmed that generallly those cranks are 104. I've found a thread or 2 discussing a 96mm BCD crank - an "M782" - why don't you ask around and check if you can find someone who is running a triple crank with no plans to go to 1 and try swap for a more standard 104?

I might even have 1 for you later today, will just need to check BB compatibility.

Ahh..think I must put my engineering/CAD skills to use...might be a market for 96 bcd narrow wide rings? Even if I only make my own...
