1x10 on a 26er

Hi guys, I am building a really decent bike for my son. I am tired of looking for decent kit for kids so building a custom bike raiding parts of bikes in the garage, the hub classifieds and the net. I am almost done but now looking at the final gearing for the bike. I am thinking of going 1x10 for the sake of simplicity for him. I have the new Deore rear derailleur with clutch. I was thinking 32 front, I currently have a 11/34 cluster but don't know if I should change that to a 36? He is 9 years old so the races (20km) he does won't exactly require him to climb any particularly steep climbs. Or should I stick to the 2x10??

The final bike should be close to the 10kg mark, I hope.

Any advice please.

Gauteng is flat, put a road cassette on, 11/25 should work. Just kidding, put on a 11/36, a 9 year old's muscles are still developing, he needs all the help he can get.

Look at the restrictions the have in road cycling and apply similar rule

This.

There is a fine line between building them up and possibly harming their growth.

My eleven year old absolutely destroys me everywhere (climbing, descending, cornering, everything) but if I was to take away some gears it would be for the sole reason of slowing the little whippet down.

If he is 9 then shouldn't it be 1x9??

And a 44 on the front?

i chukkled twice

32 ring upfront

10 speed cassette with 42tooth replacement sprocket like in the pic.

He'll be lekker fast. Up and down

Most 9 year old's still on 24 inch wheels.

So a 26 to him will be like a 29er to us.

Who am I kidding

He's probably taller than me.

stick with 2x10 as he is still growing and developing.

Being 2x10 he will also develop good gear management from both the front and back, better to learn whilst still young.

Not sure if he will have the necessary power to push 1x10? :/ If there is a reasonable hill, you need to have a decent pair legs, I battle with my 1x10, but I'm not really super fit!!

I would probably stick with 2x10 for now

mmmmm, decsions decisions...... 2x10 11-34 or 1x10 11-36...... maybe I should just try both and see what works for him....

The crank has gone in for surgery......very interested to see how this works out.

Yip XS 26er, ZTR alpine UST wheels, 2015 Deore 10spd drivetrain 150mm crank, Ritchey Superlogic flat bar. He needs to grow a bit before 29 is on the cards......
