Greetings all,

Can anyone give me some pointers were to get short (about 130mm) cranks for kids. They must be able run 5 bolt 110 bcd or 4 bolt 104 bcd chain ring.

Thanks in advance

I have just gone through the pain of this exact requirement.

In the end I got a new Deore Crank as its not hollow, found a genius hubber, Ampandy, to do some surgery and the crank is now 150mm, which will be fitted with a 32 Kitted NW chainring running a 11-36 cassette on a 26er.

Crank is in for powdercoating as we speak.

Here is a pic of the crank post surgery. 25mm was cut out. I reckon its better to cut out a section than try and retap pedal threads which must be 100% parralel to the crank shaft.

After the cutdoown I sanded it smooth with some fine waterpaper and it has been sandblasted and will be powdercoated. I will post final build images early next week.

@MuddyMike: I'll be really interested to see the results.

I have to concede, I was more looking along the lines of getting AC or Sinz cranks that are popular in the mini BMX scene overseas, but will wait with interest to see the results. Any idea what sor of cash you will be looking at when you have finished this exercise?

The crank was R999 at CWC, Powdercoating about R100, Kitted ring R450 = Total R1549, selling the new 2x10 rings off the crank for R500, so about R1150.

Chat directly to Ampandy about his surgery fees.

Overall not an expensive excercise.

So the cranks are all done, sandblasted and powder coated and looking slick at 150mm length. They will be fitted with a "Go Faster Green" Kitted 32 chainring. Its going to be a really cool build for my boy.  . Big thanks to Ampandy for helping out on this one.
