Hi Fellow cyclists

I am just starting with riding, and i would like to know if someone could point me in the right direction.

I am about 6 ft 1 ( 184cm ) and weight about 120kg.

1) does protein help during training - carbs will help a lot more than protein during training, I use HIGH5 Zero, Nuun or Rehidrat as a electrolyte replacement while training but with that I also eat a few dates with trail mix nuts, a banana and occasionally droe wors so that I at least get some carbs into my system, I regulate my carb intake and find most energy drinks are loaded with carbs hence if you looking to shed a few kg's don't go for a very high carb ratio energy drink.

2) When must it be taken - as mentioned before its best to consume pre and post training as it will aid in recovery

3) will it help with saving my muscles and aid in weight loss. - yes, but this also depends on a few factors, the type or blend of protein as well as when it is consumed.

Thanks for your help

1. Protein is not fuel. In simple terms.. fat is used as fuel at low heart rates and carbs at high heart rates.

2. If you train hard then you need to take it post ride to prevent muscle loss.

3. No.

How is your diet now - is it balanced? At 120kg I think it might not be.

At 120kg you are not going to be a race machine - start riding ease into it get used to it and enjoy it. If you are going to do some serious riding get a medical check-up first. You are not going to lose weight through riding only.

Personal opinion......eat a proper diet and try avoid the hyped supplements. It is lab manufactured products that are sometimes not produced under the strictest regulations and controls......and the research on them are not of the same caliber as those for medicine. Your body is not a lab with easily replaceable equipment......it is an organism that adapts. Heard of too many cases of liver, kidney and stomach problems due to supplement use. Rather focus on your quantity and quality of training.......it is cheaper than supplements. By the way.....a month's supply of quality protein (lekker pilchards in tomato sauce) is a quarter of the money what you will spend on supplements.
