But it certainly doesn't have to be.

Giant, raging rivers cutting a deep course through the earth, all started life as a small stream somewhere.

If everyone who has read this thread has the conviction to challenge someone they see on a phone while driving, after they have made the commitment to never engage in that kind of activity themselves, imagine what could happen?

This is already something I don't do anymore, but every conversation like this one that comes up only re-affirms my reasoning for this!

With that in mind here is my challenge to you reading this:

Can you make the ongoing choice to not actively use your cellphone whilst engaging in any activity behind the wheel of you car???

I definitely understand and appreciate your view, Tube'.

It is very idealistic. That's not a bad thing at all. Definitely not.

I'm just adding some realism to the pot of discussion. The realism that is our society, as I make sense of it.

Lekka, man, lekka.

See you at the races, J R.

Fully agree...

And to think these are the same people on the hub that post pictures of cyclist going over a red light and Flaming them, saying that they give ALL cyclists a bad name and then the preach what you are saying here....but they only speak to other cyclist not other motorists??

Then it is all about starting at home and committing to doing the right thing....

Asking someone to get off the phone while driving? No.

This raises another interesting question though. Have you ever told anyone to get off the phone whilst driving if they were actually on the phone to you? Has Smimby, I wonder?

It certainly was not something I used to worry much about up until a couple of years ago. I've been commuting for roughly 16 years now. The first 8 and half were daily, but I do school runs twice a week now and that's difficult with just a bicycle... Lately those near misses are starting to become far too frequent and 99% of the time the driver is on a phone. You don't even have to guess anymore it's got that bad. Can't drive in a straight line, almost tailgates the car in front at every traffic deceleration instance, is totally oblivious as to what is actually going on around them. So, nowadays I do care and if I can obviously hear that the person calling me is on the phone whilst driving I suggest they send me a message when they get to where they are driving and I'll call them back. If they decline and attempt to continue chatting I say that I am in the middle of something and cannot chat now and will rather call back later.

It is not idealistic, you do not become a better climber by doing nothing?

But then again you seem to have a total different point of view when it comes to safety on the public roads anyway.....

Just because that COULD happen does not mean it WILL happen....

I see LOTS of engagement between strangers, so I do not agree with your point here, bottom line is I am trying SOMETHING to make the road safer and you are not.

I am only alerting you to the sphere of possibilities when it comes to approaching strangers with what you value most in that situation.

And it did happen to you where you were not received well, smimby. The man in the car did not react well although you meant well as he prob perceived you as rude or something (see my list of attributes).

I do not 'value' road safety with the same vigour, commitment and crusading you do as you continue to raise the issue in so many forums and when we used to roll together.

I bring my vigour, commitment and crusading in other areas of my life.

People have different 'value' systems. It doesn't make yours more important than mine or anyone else's. It just that; it's different.

Bru, it's December. We need to do some long rides again! Are you around CT for the festive season?

Of course, it is idealistic (which is not a bad thing)

It would be an ideal world where all road users followed the rules of the road and responded with an apology when pointed out to other road users.  :P

Yes, I'm around.

Le'me know, man.

However, I do value other things more. People have different 'value' systems.

I don't understand your post, I know it was not received well no need for you to tell me.

I know you do not value safety of yourself, but what about safety of others???.

People do have different values and one value I have learnt while commuting is the opinion that motorist have of us as cyclist...ie that we "do not belong on the road"

I am trying to convince everyone family member /non cycling friend that their view is wrong and we should share the road, but I have seen blatant disregard to someone elses LIFE and motorist have to the road. (You should know who I am talking about here!) I spoke up at the time, and it was called a Grey area....which it is / was NOT!

Those actions have  definitely caused SOME motorist to hate cyclist.

Why don't you start then? At least 3 of us will be doing it then

You are getting personal on a public forum and bringing a private matter into some viewing here.

That is uncool.

I have only been relating to your opening post.

I ask that you do the same, man.

Well done sir. Although, as mentioned earlier, I think it is texting and driving that is the more dangerous activity.

It is really dangerous hey.

Yoh.

And then there's drinking-and-driving or DUI (drinking under the influence).

And these are the high-risk days of year end holidays.

This thread is heading straight where the "do you always stop and wait at a stop or red light" discussion went a few months back. A fair amount of hubbers said- nought, if its safe for me I go when I want to, regardless of laws etc.

just becoming a nit pick of you said, I said infanticide.

Be safe or as safe as you want your loved one's to be on the road this festive season.

I was getting more chilled about this thread and then this. Huez was actually bringing a modicum of level-headed calm to this debate. Now you've decided to throw a few barbs in his direction to hurt him and bolster your passive-aggressive crusade.

Not cool.

Also exiting this thread.

Please read again why I posted here.....his reaction to my comment not the action....how we react when we know we are in the wrong.....

I commute on a daily basis and can tell you a KM away who is on their phone. I stopped doing that decades ago...it is dangerous,

i drive over 2000 k's and (try) and ride a 900 k's a month. the biggest threat to all road users are drivers using a cellphone. the amount of drivers i come across up and down the n1 is unbelievable.
