Hey it's Friday, almost holiday and I don't have a lot of work so lets go

SAGecko & MTB-BFK - the problem with your line of reasoning is that talking on your cellphone while driving is not a harmless minor indescretion like not coming to a full stop at a stop sign. People talking on cellphones cause accidents that kill & maim innocent road users, if you don't believe me the stats are there - google it.

Part of the problem is that people out there are totally ignorant about the dangers of using a cell phone when driving, seeing it as a harmless indescretion . People's behavior will only change if it becomes socially unacceptable to do so, which is why I commend someone like Smimby pointing it out to a motorist.

Swissvan, not to pick on you - but if people wan't to see how far off we are from this being socially unacceptable your post is the perfect example

SAGecko - Interesting how you list all your minor road sins but also make a big point of saying that you obey the cellphone law, which completely sinks your argument because you recognise that talking on your cellphone while driving is in a different category.

Joh! Since when is being honest and admitting to something bad "socially unaccetable"....

My well hidden point was that (IMO) a lot of people would LIKE to abide by the logic of self preservation / law of not using cellphones while driving....yet some (imo)  buckle and despite their good intentions chance fate / break the law and look at or use the damn things when they think no one will see them....

Come on admit it / free yourself of your guilt..... you surely have glanced at the thing to see who just sms'sd at some stage while driving? ^_^

Yeah yeah yeah, this point has been well made. BUT the way you react when its pointed out is another story.

If you decide to take a risk and talk on your phone, not wear a seatbelt, sneak over a red robot when it seems "safe", fart in Woolworths etc... you must also be prepared to be called out for doing so, its part of your decision.

If you see a kid stealing a lollie pop, will you let him be, or call him out for it? Its only R1 after all.

And then if said kid throws a tantrum and tells you he will klap you later, will you then say "well I should have not been self-righteous and said anything, I deserved that reaction"? Probably not.

OK, I get your point, my intention really was not to pick on you but I will be glad when we get to the point where we would be too embarrassed to admit it on a public forum....

That a lot of hubbers are much more concerned with Smimby's attitude than a motorist endangering others is very telling..

You may well be entitled to voice your dissatisfaction with what you consider to be law-breaking behaviour, but unless you are a cop, you have no authority to do anything about it.  If you feel so strongly about lawlessness, join the police, or become a reservist.  This may help your frustration - also try riding harder.

The thing I find interesting is that you also feel entitled to dictate how the driver should respond.  Your action was invasive, and inappropriate.  The guy's actions had not resulted in driving that in any way affected you.  you took it upon yourself to PRESUME that he MAY drive poorly, as he MAY use his mobile when driving (although not at the time you passed), but in fact had not yet.  Also, his not wearing a seatbelt only affects him.  Your response on this seems just like self-righteousness to me.  Who are you then to say how he should or should not react?  What did  you expect?  This seems exactly like the sort of mentality that caused Tim Osrin to beat up that maid.  Mind your own business unless the person's driving actually affect you, or join the cops - you don't get to play toy cop and then moan when people get irritated by you

I read this post a few times now, and it is you isn't it?

The above gave it away....

But did the driver ACTUALLY endanger someone?  Seems like the OP through he PROBABLY would endanger someone. Is it the same thing?

Does not matter, if you disobey the law ANYONE has the right to call you out on it....including littering (or do you expect ONLY to the police to do that ?)

True, but really it wasn't me

I get your point, but it's like arguing a drunk driver or someone in a car not roadworthy waiting at a red light is not a danger to anyone.

How much are you willing to bet that the driver was not on the phone before/after the few seconds the light was red? My issue is more with the driver's general disregard for his fellow road users safety than with the few seconds he was waiting at the red light. If he only ever talks on the phone when the light is red I will almost take my accusation back but he is still breaking the law.

fair enough, even if I don't agree with your examples.  When the light turns green, you can't undrunk nor auto-roadworthy a car when the light changes.  you CAN hang up the phone though

Funnily enough, I most agree with you on the littering thing - there is nothing that makes my blood boil more than people chucking $#it out of car windows, or walking on the street and just tossing their cr@p everywhere.  I suppose different things bother people in different ways.  I don't find a guy talking on a phone at a red light objectionable.  I especially don't give a $#it if a random stranger is not wearing a seatbelt

But do you?

Really now!!
