The problem here is that when someone is hurt or what ever, u have to call police and the metro rescue or ambulance.

What we should have is a centralised call center and then from there calls can be dispatched depending on the situation.

EMS call centre 021-4807700 or from cell 112

What I do not think all of you might be aware of is that about a year ago family living under that Bridge notified police of and have them the details of a person who was Mugging people allong the Lane.

Just because a person is homeless does not immediately relegate then to criminal status.

I do however agree that the illegal squatters do need to be relocated.

I have seen stories similar too this one many times over many years. People get pissed off with the homeless because they are such an irritating, messy eyesore , but very often they are NOT the guilty ones. Often they prefer not to have crime on their turf, simply because it brings the cops and harassment for them.

The muggers are generally much younger and better dressed.

“Good day

Duly noted. We are aware of the muggings and my staff are busy investigating. Once we are done I will give you feedback. For peace of mind the Atlantis IRT L/E will cover the area from Zoarvlei up to the N1 bridge and my Cape Town team will cover from Civic up to the N1 bridge from 16h00 to 18h30.

I see on the "things I learned from commuting" thread that someone nearly got 'jacked there the other night too.

That was me yes, I am quite skeptical of the bit between the bridge after paarden eiland and the gate to station side. I fear using lower main road due to traffic and the N1 never crossed my mind. I have seen two guys pull a trolley through the spaces in fence. I need a new commute route :(

Hi

Wasn't an mp mugged along this route a few years ago when he tried to highlight the safety of cycling along the bike lanes, I remember they managed to track his belonging inn thru his cell phone gps, wouldn't it be prudent to contact this mp in the wc offices that has experienced these challenges and also the position to highlight the plight of cyclists and power to get answers from the responsible parties.

Just a thought..

Yes he was mugged....Sorry the mp with his personal body guard was mugged.

Prior to this there were a couple of muggings on that stretch (I personally reported a mugging of a battered tourist I found on the route after his incident) and nothing was done to the broken fences or any additional security put in place.

MP gets his iphone taken and in very short time the fence is repaired and there are security vehicles at strategic points.

A year or so prior to the above we were seeing many riders be hit by car s and getting no awareness for cyclist safety from the council or ppa.....council guy gets taken out by a car and all of a sudden council are on point with ppa puffing up their chest with big promises. .......I even attended the awareness ride set up and it was very impressive with the ppa in force, local radio station interviewing one of the organisers (my woodsy was in a brace and could not cycle solo, so was on the back of his tandem with the speaker phone strapped to my back), council coming down to get some paper work from ppa, council putting on a spread of drinks and eats for the riders.....ppa promising to do this sort of ride often.. ...Well that was that.

What I am trying to say is that the powers that be only seem to react when under pressure from the media or when their own are effected.

Hairy, you are so right.

Most politicians are by nature selfish animals.

All we can do is to make it so hot for them that they act to protect their own images, again for selfish reasons, but at least we get something out of it.

Currently, the whole success of the West Coast cycle lane is the balance because the perception that it is dangerous has been allowed to grow, I think, beyond a critical mass, from which it might not recover. When people abandon using it, it will not recover easily and a multi million rand asset will fail.

IT IS TIME TO DRAW THE LINE AND ACT FORCEFULLY AND SORT THIS ISSUE OUT.

CITY OF CAPE TOWN, ARE YOU LISTENING?

Posted

I know this is a long shot but what can we as cyclists do to highlight to these challenges..

If I also recall Helen zille is pro cycling and a few years ago they proposed the city be cycle friendly with many bike lanes leading into the city and the inner city would be a huge cycle only zone, if this is their vision it's never going to be successful with the risk gettin to the cbd.

Are we as cyclists doing enough to make our frustrations known to the people who can make a difference. We need a mass mobilization and a memorandum be handed to Aunty Patty on our challenges. We as tax payers can demand a response and action plan on how to make our roads safer.

I agree with each of you. I love cycling to and from work, but its not fun when you worried about what lies behind every bush or bridge and not another soul in sight

As I was about to start my commute home today as guy at work warned me not to go on the Cycle lane.He had to stop on the N1/Tablebay Boulevard on 24/12 to help a guy that had just been bike jacked on the cycle lane.Bummer to have your pride and joy stolen the day before X'mas.Be careful out there!!!

So not only does the original incident at the start of this thread go bye with no improvement in the safety, but another cyclist gets mugged.

This is ridiculous.
