Hi All,

I've started mountain biking with a bit of road and trail riding, I would appreciate any advice you can give me on getting a bike with the most bang for buck.

My budget is about 11K. I have been looking at the Titan Comp 2015 29er and the Silverback Solo 3 2015 29er. Which would you recommend?

The Silverback appears to be lighter (13.3kg) than the Titan. (unknown weight).

But the Titan seems to have the better group set?

Which other bikes in this price range would you recommend? Preferably I want to buy new as I'm still learning.

Thanks

Go for the bike with the best components and that is more comfortable. Keep in mind that you can get a much better bike with better spec if you buy a used bike.

For that budget, see if you can get hold of a 2014 Specialized Crave - excellent alloy racing hardtails.

A 2014 model will guarantee a nice discount from the Spez dealer, as they try to get rid of 2014 stock.

Check the hub, there's often some really good deals.

Thanks Floatfox, but having just started I'm a bit weary about buying second hand as I wouldn't know what to look for (eg: if the frame has been broken and held together with super glue etc hahaha)

Thanks so out of the Titan and Silverback it appears the Titan has better components will do some more research,

Hi,

I paid R11,250 for my Sola 2 2014 in August, Got a really nice price because it was 2014 end of range. Still a very good specced bike for the price though (XT + SLX + RockShox Recon Air fork).

If you're willing to drive through to Rtb to collect, I can pop in at the lbs to see what they've got in stock? What size frame are you looking for? In terms of specs I assume you'd like an air shock up front + SLX or better groupset?

Let me know, I'm going to pop in there tomorrow after work.

In terms of Sola vs Titan Comp, the Sola will be a bit lighter for sure, but both are pretty decent frames. If  you have to choose between the two it comes down to lighter weight vs slightly better spec. It's easier to upgrade components than to reduce weight. Also, keep in mind that the Sola has a tapered headset, which would be better for future upgrades.

Regards

Hi ArnoRTB,

Greatly appreciate you offer and advice, rtb is a fair distance luckily my lbs has the Solo 2, will check it out next week. Makes sense what you saying regards a lighter frame vs components.

For what it's worth, the lbs has the 2014 Sola 2 @ R10,400, 2014 Sola 3 @ R8,000, and the 2015 Titan Comp @ R9,700. The 2015 Sola 3 @ +/- R9,300, can't remember exactly though. Also running a killer deal on a mongoose with Deore + Alivio components, Hayes hydraulic brakes, XCR air shock and free tubeless upgrade @ R7,500. Got some pics on my cell if you're interested.
