Did it in 42min, happy with finishing my first open water swim! My body is hurting though, not used to this one bit.

RIP to the gentleman who lost his life on Saturday, very sad.

That's three years in a row now..this year there was an option to swim with a buoy..which apparently you didn't even notice..next year it will be compulsory

Do you think they will make it compulsory, or have they already said so ?

Was checking them out yesterday and a lot of swimmers had them. Seems like a neat and effective solution.

Just wonder is the likes of Chad Ho etc will swim with them, given that there must be a little bit of drag on them, making record challenges harder. Then again if everyone is wearing one, then the playing fields are level.

Perhaps if you have never swum a Midmar or have not done a seeding race beforehand then I think it might be a good idea that it is compulsory to wear a buoy.

Seeding events are much smaller numbers, so at least it is easier to monitor and you get the experience of open water swimming.

Am sure there are a lot of swimmers who do the midmar and perhaps have minimal training or no idea how different open water swimming is to being in a pool and perhaps is why they get into difficulty.

I do not know whether the guy's swimming history as to whether he was proficient in open water swimming or not.

But at least if you make it compulsory for swimmers to wear a buoy without any open water experience then hopefully it might assist.... as is unlikely they will be racing or going for records, more just the achievement of finishing.

Super chuffed with myself successfully completed my first 8 Mile Club Midmar! So that means i swam all 8 miles of the Midmar weekend, super happy and even more chuffed as i am not at all sore so i could have gone harder/faster. Oh well next year i will know!

well done to all who swam!

I swam in event 2 on Saturday for the Choc Cows - was my first event with them and what an awesome group they are! (If any hubbers are feeling generous or want to help support this cause, head over to http://mtbc.givengain.org:thumbup:  )

In the pool, I was doing the mile in about 28 minutes, but on the day, only managed a 37m. That put me at about 85th in the 31-40 cat. Dunno how you 8-milers do it, I felt a little stiff. Swallowed plenty of water.

Condolences to the lost swimmer. I heard his brother swam it with a team of defence force swimmers on Sunday to finish on his behalf.

I don't even think a compulsory seeding race is such a bad idea. My missus and I swam at Heia a couple of weeks before to get some open water practice in. Wind and choppiness makes a hell of a difference!

I didn't think I would ever do the 8 miles but man I'm so glad I did, it's an awesome feeling!

Ya brother swam the first race on the Sunday with the 8 milers and orange caps. There was a minute silence before the race and you could literally hear a pin drop. The brother was behind me sobbing his heart out, it was very hard.

Lots of people ask me about swimming open water and especially Midmar and my blanket response is, you need to swim at least 2 races before you get there and make sure 1 is an official qualifier. If not, don't go!
