Some say that a 29er HT is the same as an outdated 26er DS. "They" also said that if your mates ride 29ers, you will never keep up with them if you don't have one. It has to be true, as it was stated on the Hub...

Everybody trying to affirm their own choice to themselves here. Lots of good DS XC and XC/Trail bikes on the market.

Ride as many as you can and buy the one that fits you best. We all have different bodies and not every bike will be a good fit for you. Also consider availability of parts, frame warranty, willingness of the lbs to loan or set a bike up for you to test etc.

Many thanks for the advice. Specialized is loaning a bike this weekend. Cycle lab apparently don't let you test their bikes because, as the salesman told me, "the factory tests them so you don't need to".

Where would be a good supplier to try and get a ride on some bikes? Don't necessarily need the full spez treatment, but would be nice to at least have a wee spin up and down the road to get the feel.

If you are about to spend R30k on a bike and they won't spend 10 min to pump the tyres, set the saddle and adjust the bars for you to have a 5 min spin around the parking lot then walk away. Better is when the shop loans you a demo or meets you at a local trail for a brief test ride. Some lbs arrange demo days...ask about these.

The "factory tests them so you don't have to" speech is BS. You are not testing the bike, you are testing how well it fits YOU....they can't do that at the factory.

Spez let me loan a Camber for the weekend, that made my mind up. I also like the fact how you can get componets (Swart system ) and it all fits like lego.

Something else to consider - you want to feel good about your bike.

Narrow the choices down until they are all pretty much the same. Then take the one that puts a smile on your face.

Thanks. Have a spez arranged this weekend and a Rocky Mountain for next weekend to try. Not sure how to arrange to try the giant or the Scott.

Where did you organise the Rocky Mountain? Would love to try one out myself!

I am also in the market for a new bike, I have done alot of research not only in SA the UK, US, Auz and NZ and one thing I can say the most common bike brand that comes up is Giant regardless where you are there has to be a reason for that.

What the rubber duck! So you should drop your bees and honey without even rolling on the bike. Eish. Thank the Pope my LBS are not like that.

Anthem, that is all.

Its not really that simple but dont buy until you have at least tried the anthem.

I ride a Spez roadie which I love but the anthem felt like a better mtb to me than the rest of the similar priced bikes.

Really trying to take this advice but can't find anywhere in gauteng or Cape Town (here for a few days) that has an anthem to try, other than a quick spin around the car park.

Guys

Sorry, last request for some help with a decision. So i tested the Specialized camber comp (unfortunately they only had a carbon loan bike) and the Rocky Mountain Element 950 2014 aluminum. Couldn't find any shops with test bikes in any of the other brands. Loved both bikes. However, as a technical noob, which of the two would you say was the best value for money. the Camber comp would be the 2015 model at around 29k and the Rocky mountain is the 2014 model at around 31k.

many thanks in advance.
