Collarbone plate removal

Eish! Reading this gives me the shivers. I have 6 levels fused in my spine with a bunch of rods and screws. All flex takes place above or below. Combination of a fall and low bone density. A big enough crash will either paralyse or kill me.

Think I should uninstall Strava 'cos it is tempting me to ride faster than I should.

Difficult to decide if I should have all the metalwork removed. Surgery risk and long recovery vs. possible worse consequences if I leave it in

Eish!!!  I'd definitely uninstall Strava!  I only have a plate from a big crash that fractured my collar bone in four places...and I'm still not entirely over my fear of crashing that hard again.  I can't imagine how slow I'd ride if I had that metalwork in my back?!?

Just saw my surgeon and I am not allowed to ride until I see him in 8 weeks...thank goodness he okay'd my use of the IDT because I am going mental...

I know the feeling...  Did you have another plate put in or are you healing naturally this time?

Got my plate removed a year after my first surgery because my plate was coming out. The holes from the screws definitely makes your bone weaker/painful for a bit. 4 weeks at least.

If you do go for a second surgery, make sure they remove as much previous scar tissue as they can. it still irritates me with bib shorts and even seat belts.

(cyclists should just have the option of replacing the entire damn things with a titanium one. Stupid inconvenient bone)

Good luck.

I was on the IDT 5 days after the op, and stayed on it for 4 weeks. Even did my LSDs on it (4h30 was the longest) you will go insane after a while regardless :)

Or maybe I went insane from too much LSD... look a rabbit

Took mine out a year after a pretty good fall & nicely splintered bone. Took it out because of being warned that the next break would probably be at the end of the plate & a lot more complicated to repair & also because it hurt like hell if you put decent pressure on it. After removal, recovery was quick, but still sore to press on the bone - suspect that this is a result of scar tissue, etc.
