Giant Anthem X29er?

I bought a 2015 Anthem X29 Alu just before Christmas. I have only dont about 300 kms on it and really enjoying it. my only complaint so far is that i have a creak that started on the second ride. I think its coming from the crank as i can hear it on the down stroke on my right leg. its starting to drive me insane. sometimes its worse and sometimes its completely gone. Thought it was only my bike, but over the weekend I rode behind someone on exactly the same bike and he has the exact same creak coming from his bike. Its going for its first service next week. Hopefully they will be able to sort it out. I cant recreate the sound any other time than when im riding. (any suggestions??)

The first thing ill change on the stanard bike is ill look from some lighter wheels! the P-xc2 wheels feel like they are made from lead. other than that, its a great bike with great components! nothing compares in that Price range.

Had a similiar issue on my XTC. Do you get the same creak when you are out of the saddle?

The reason I'm asking is that it drove me insane and no matter what I did as soon as I sat on the bike it made that noise... long story short... was my saddle  . Removed it and re assmbled it with correct torque and some q20 on the rails... the bike rode as silent as a cat.

Had this issue this weekend on my new Anthem was the back axle, the "quick release" was loose, only realised this when i was loading my bike to take it to the shop (because its only 2 weeks old) and realised my back wheel was loose.

Well if this is the truth than somebody is in for some issues around false advertising:

This was taken of two off the shelf bikes at the concept store with standard spec as per the website.

If what you are saying is true I'm buying the Alu one today.

Wheelset is far lighter on the carbon bike so that'll contribute to the weight difference as well as the other components

I have a creak too and it comes from the seatpost, remove seatpost, little bit of grease and back in, and it sorts it out for a couple of weeks ...

WHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT!!!!!!! Almost R16 000 more for the Advanced??? No way I'm paying that for a little bit of extra nothing they slapped onto that bike. Four Five Six!

My bike now weighs approx the same as the Advanced and cost me approx. R30000 with the upgrades in total ...

But wow the prices have gone up, I paid R23000 for my 2014 last year January ...

Bud if 970 grams is a problem, here's what you do. Replace the wheels with ZTR Arches (tubeless, seeing that the tyres on the stock bike will have tubes in) that'll save you about 900 grams on both wheels and strong as hell. Then replace the SLX crank with a XT crank, now we're down to 11.4kg. Then replace the stock handlebar with a carbon handlebar (S-LK?)....now we're down to 11.2kg. That'll costs round about R8000 for the upgrades. So we at R35 000 for a beast of a bike....and 400 gram lighter than the stock Advanced and R4000 cheaper still.

But that's just my opinion.

I'll look into this. I really like the way you think. I have to replace my XTC and this is my first dual... so maybe a bit biased as the XTC was a composite machine and I absolutely loved it. I'm no racing snake but in the pissing contest between my mates and I, I usually held my own.

Think I need to go back to basics:

1. Harden the f-up

2. It's not about the bike but the man on it

3. Don't think around R15k justifies the loss of a couple of grams - peddle harder and lose those grams hehehehe

I really like the Anthem although my friends try to ram a Spez down my throat... (I'm a very outspoken non Spez fan, although the SWAT system is the only reason I might consider it)

Think it's time to go sleep on it again.

SWAT system SCHMAT system...keep your toolkit in your back pocket. Tell your Spez friends to show you their annual maintenance invoices on the Brain.

Listen man, everyone here will just add their 5cents....don't let any of our opinions influence your decision. At the end of the day it's what you like the most and what you feel comfortable on...you will have to ride it not me.

I absolutely love my Anthem....but let me tell you this, I'm no brand ambassador, but if I had R46 000 to spend.....there'll be a Pyga standing in my bike room not a Giant....but I'm not sad, I love my Anthem....

Well you basically just pointed out the obvious what I was actually trying to talk myself out of.

If money wasn't an issue... there would be a Santa Cruz in my stable, but if I want to eat... the Giant will have to do.

Exactly....

Get the Giant, you won't regret it.....now, to open up a brand new can of worms for you. Are you going to get the new Anthem with the Fox shocks and float like a butterfly....or search for an end of range one (same bike) with the Rockshox setup that stings like a ballsy bee?

Happy hunting

I had a similar problem but turned out to be my rear hub that was moeg.

New hub and silent.

I will say though that after 450km, no high pressure hose cleaning but regular soapy water and I had to have 2 linkage bearings replaced which I thought was a bit ridiculous.

I have heard of guys overseas who say Giant does not lube them sufficiently out the factory so maybe that is something others with Anthem's can comment on.

Light for an alu bike. Very nice. My L Anthem X29er weighs 12,7kg with pedals and 2 bottle cages but I still have standard Giant seatpost and bars. Going in today for service and setting fork to 120mm travel.

If that's the X29er 1 is it possible to increase the fork to 120mm or have you changed the fork? I was told it's not possible

If your aim is to enjoy technical singletrack, I would go for the 27.5 Anthem or Anthem SX. The Anthem 29 struggles a bit in handling tight corners, it has very long chainstays and a steep head tube angle. I have ridden the Anthem 29er for 4 years and my next bike will be the 27.5 version, not because I think 27.5 is better than 29, but because the 27.5 Anthem has got a much better geometry than the 29er, and I believe will handle better and be much more agile in tight singletrack.

Great advice.

I would love to get 27.5 for shorter single track rides, but I think if you are aiming to do longer endurance type stuff 29er is the way to go...and it will still handle the tight stuff.....but that Trance does look pretty inviting.
