Ok so I am know i am going to get major back lash for this but anyway..

For the last two and a bit years I have been riding the oneten but recently got a deal on the new tall boy carbon frame so decided to build it up.over the past weekend I decided to do a 70km test ride using both the Tall boy and the Pyga,my riding partner would be my swop partner for my discover

The climbs:

Clearly the tall boy has the weight advantage and it proved itself on the climbs saying that the Pyga climbs well but the Tall boy took the honors.

The decents:

The important thing for me as I ride up to get the joy of the decents. The tall boy to me felt exceptionally twitchy and I found myself having to shift my weight like never before to get the most out of the geometry on the other hand the Pyga rode like a well balanced trail eating machine which left me wanting more. The comment my partner made still rings in my ears (I can't believe how easy this bike is to ride i felt like I always been riding this bike )after he destroy the strava segment he had just completed.

I suppose my learning curve is an expense one but for me there is no bike like the oneten next step Pyga carbon wheels and treat this frame like a princess because she's going to be around for a while.my advice to anyone out there is don't follow the masses get out there test the bike you all ways dream about and you might be surprise that it's not the bike for you.

I am so relieved to see a vs thread on the hub not including Specialized.

I will say 110, when they make it in carbon it wil be realky special. And really expensive also.

Since Chris Willemse cycles started pumping out 25 Santa Cruz Talboys a day, they are now the weapon of choice for newbies with some money.

"twitchy"

So maybe share some details of the two setups...stem, bars, fork, shock, tyres etc.

Not doubting the Pyga but since your Tallboy build is brand new are you sure you got it dialled?

Wow, that's some admission and an accolade for the Pyga! I must concur it's a joy to ride, there's a lot to be said for a well put together bike. Have to agree on the Santa Cruz comment as well...

The Tallboy is a better climber but what makes it so detracts from the descent. It's not as geared towards trail riding as the Pyga.

There are plenty of Santa Cruz models with slacker angles and more travel.

Horses for courses, you aren't comparing apples with apples.

If you think a Tallboy is twitchy you should try my Flash!

Again, completely different bike for a different purpose.

Actually there is only 1 model. The ltc. We are talking 29ers of course.

The tall boy was set up with xx1 ,fox float 110mm ,Ztr crests, ritchey carbon post ,ritchey carbon 60mm stem and xx1 breaks

Hind sight breaks wrong choice aswell can't beat Xt for value and breaking power

Both had racing Ralph on back and rocket Ron on front

Thats how I like the. Wagon wheels for life. Love my Stumpjumper 29er.

Big wheel fan myself but then I also prefer climbs to descent and would be on my hard tail if I hadn't broken my neck!

Both are 29er XC/Trail bikes with 100/110 mm rear travel and designed for 100 to 120 mm forks although many fit a longer fork on the 110. The TB has a steeper head angle so would be more susceptible to a too short stem...is why I asked setup. The Pyga maybe more trail oriented and the TB more XC but they are natural market competitors. Both would be on the radar for a rider looking for a nice trail bike that is suitable for XC and Stage racing.

I agree SC has a lot more descent oriented options but then Pyga does too...thinking Bronson vs Pascoe or 5010 vs 120-650.

You are right. Both fill the same cycling need at both ends of that need's spectrum.

The OP and I are looking for different things from a trail bike with xc capability or even (in my case) a marathon bike with a bit of trail thrown in.

My reason for the post was more to highlight the fact that the bike you always admire isn't always the ride you may expect

I built the bike for the exact reason the TB would be the stage race machine but I didn't expect the major sacrifice on the DH.

What setup on the Pyga and what bars on both?

I know it goes against current fashion but try a slightly longer stem on that TB. Thinking 70mm 'cos my LTc has 70mm as standard. Bike felt too short so I tried a 90. It slowed the steering noticeably so I went back to the 70 with wider bars instead. You experienced opposite problem hence longer stem suggestion.

Also...the factory spec TBs all come with 120mm forks. Shops that sell built up frames...not sure what they are putting on. The longer fork would also assist slightly with trail feel
