I'm busy putting together a carbon FS (FM036 frame), all components sourced online (mostly CRC), full XT groupo, brand new Reba TA fork, new wheels, etc.

Total cost: R27K.

Estimated price of comparative full carbon FS bike off the shelf. Don't know, but north of R40K I'm sure.

Edit: forgot that I still need to get new pedals. So let's make it R28.5K.

Still a Huge saving if you are prepared to spend some time online and building it up yourself.

Any advice on where to look around for components etc? I know all the basics but am not to sure i am capable of building a good bike myself.

Just a question... if you had a choice of a Vipa or a hardtail. Which one would you go home with? Ignoring your mates and their pushing. Your choice.

the Hardtail.

I don't think the VIPA is nearly as good as the hype around it. Not its fault but rather a pervasive behaviour of the times we live in.

Julian, if you don't want to (can't) build it yourself then budget for maybe another R700 - R900 at the most for your LBS to do it for you. Still way cheaper :).

And if you are mates with the guys at the shop (e.g. my club is run from my LBS so I ride with the guys) then ask them if you can be there when they put certain parts together. Like installing the brakes, or BB/crank, etc. Get to know the mechanic on a first name basis. You'll pick up sooo much knowledge from them that way.

Oh, and then make sure you support that LBS going forward - as an acknowledgement for building your bike up for you.

Well thanks for all the advice everyone.

I have decided to go for a Momsen SL929 frame and use as many components  from my old bike as possible. I'll then upgrade brakes, shifters etc as I go along. May cost a little more in the long run, but hey at least I won't have to finance anything.

Thanks again for all the input, don't know if I have made the right call but I am still pretty excited!

Cost less than your budget .

What an awesome machine .

Service from Lynnwood cyclery must be about the best in the cycling industry .

Money well spent
