3Mountains MTB Challenge an epic alternative

Are you a mountain biker but not up to the challenge or the cost of that big race in the Western Cape, or just do not have the time?

Well, there is a great alternative that takes place in the Free State over the same period when mountain biking comes to a standstill for the other thousands of riders in South Africa.

It is a race called the 3Mountains MTB Challenge and is the only mountain bike stage race to take place in the Free State. This exciting event will take place from 19 to 22 March 2015 in and around the beautiful town of Clocolan.

The race caters for those who would never want to attempt such a hardcore event such as the Cape Epic and the organisers have added shorter routes for those starting out in stage racing or the longer route for the more advanced riders or those looking for a proper challenge which means all fitness and skill levels are accommodated.

The race will show case the beauty of the province. With a friendly community and great land owners, riders of the 3Mountains MTB Challenge will pass over virgin land that will only be available to ride during the race. Riders can look forward to riding over undulating jeep tracks, 4x4 trails, sections of single track and gravel roads

Riders will be excited to know that none of the routes are the same as in 2014. A whole new exciting experience is to be expected.

A prize fund of R64 000 will be divided up between the nine different racing categories !

The race is run over four stages. Starting with a night stage on Thursday the 19th of March, followed by three morning stages on the next days.

The cost for the race is also very good in terms of stage racing being only R2800 for a team of two riders. Solo riders can also compete over the long distance with an entry fee of R1400 or R900 for the shorted easier route.

In the main race the organisers cater for loads of different groups, Open Team, Mixed Team, Masters Team, Solo Male & Solo Female.

Riders will also get a T shirt, goodie bag, finisher’s medals and bike wash and lube after each stage.

The Chain wizard will be at the rider’s service for any bike maintenance needs. He is the best in the business and can sort any problems.

Massage in Motion will be ready to take care of any aches and pains in the form of sports massaging after and before every stage.

Powasol will be in charge of leaving your bike spotless after every stage and ready for pick up at the bike wash.

Accommodation and food is not provided as the organization of the race have decided to rather focus on giving the rider a great race and route experience, this leaves riders free to decide where they would like to stay. And what they would like to eat. With the Clocolan Annual Fair over the same weekend, riders will have loads of options.

Accommodation can be found of the race webpage.

Hi guys who did thisbrace and how was it, i am inteested to do it

I did it. Was lekker. Nice and challenging but completely doable.

Lots of effort is made by George the organiser and his team.

They have moved it from the showgrounds to a new venue, I think the school.

Some breathtaking views and if not racing it, some good pics can be taken en route.

I have already entered for this year.
