New XT Shadow-Plus Rear Derailleur Wont Shift To Smallest Gear

I am fitting my son's bike with a new XT groupset, but I can't get it to shift to the smallest gear on the cassette.  I have check that the end point adjustment is correct on both sides.  The cable tension is also correct.

Does this maybe mean that the hanger is bent?

It does not look bent, but my eyes might deceive me.

No, completely new XT groupset.  10 speed of everything.  New 10 speed I-Spec B shifters (SL-M780-B-I), new 10 speed Shadow+ derailleur (RD-M786), new 11-36T 10 speed cassette (CS-M771-10).

Undo the cable.

Does it go into the smallest cog now?

If it does, then you had too much tension on the cable.

If it does not, you limit screw needs adjustment.

Jis, I feel like an idiot.  Thought I had the tension correct.  Must have messed it up when I tried to get the indexing correct.

Works now.

Thanks Tankman.

Had the same issue with a new XT RD plus....mine is a long cage model.

I'm no bike mech, but I did 2 things:

a) extended the chain length to the correct fit

b) gave the spring on the RD a bit of a stretch by opening it to it's full range

Seems to work ok now.

No worries.

So we all learn.

I always set the limit screws first witout the cable attached. You can move the derailleur to the biggest cog by pushing it with your hand. Once that's done, derailleur and chain back in smallest cog... connect the cable.

Then all you have to do is fine tune the tension.

Sounds simple when you have done it a gazillio times! :D

That is where I went wrong.  I tried setting the endpoint after the cable was tensioned.  It was probably wrong in the first place which would explain why after fitting the derailleur it did not want to go onto the smallest gear with the cable not connected yet.

Won't make that mistake again.

Glad you've come right. Now I've got to get back to the bleeding of my Formula C1 brakes. Only been 3 hours!! Wish I was busy with a drivetrain upgrade instead. #highjackoff

I was thinking of doing it myself - now it is off to the LBS.
