My 3rd attempt at a midlands ultra medal...first time I pulled out about 6km's from the end in agony caused by cramps.... in hindsight I should of sat for 20 minutes and resumed but hindsight is always 20:20 vision hey. Second attempt was in December last year which was cancelled due to notorious weather conditions and well 3rd time lucky.

The week running up to the event saw me checking weather forecasts closely, very closely. The forecasts were not positive but anyway us triathletes being a stubborn bunch I drove down on Saturday morning and registered. it was sunny but weather predictions were ominious for sunday. I spoke to the organizer on Saturday and I know he was concerned too as another cancellation could potentially be disastrous for the event in future.

Sunday morning I woke up to a beautiful day.... got ready, checked in the bike, went through my race mentally a couple of times. The sprint event got underway and pretty soon the ultra started too.

My swim was strong, came out the water in 28 minutes or so. swimming is my forte so was in the leading bunch out of the water although this never lasts too long :) ...bike went well until I got the mother of all cramps at around 80km's....stopped stretched and was able to cycle to the end...the cycle was about 2km's long but no problem. The course was not so easy and I registered 1465 metres of elevation over the 90 (92) kkm's ...fairly warm too. Have to compliment the marshalls and the traffic in the area...superbly run and the traffic was generally patient. Cycle leg completed and I was out and running at around 3:50 total time. Was looking forward to a sub 6:10 at this point as I felt generally strong and good.

Run went pear shaped, nothing specifically went wrong I just could not get a good rhythm going, why I don't know. there were more than enough water points dishing ou gels, bananas, water, coke, GU brew and these were well manned by cheerful happy people. As the run was a 3 lap of 7 km's there were 4 water points on every lap so just about every 2 kms. Well stocked and never ran out of anything. I finished around 6:30 which was a bit disappointing but at least I managed to finish this event, and as I crossed te line the rain started ....most expensive medal in my collection considering I have had to do 3 trips to actually finish the event.

All in all, a great event, well organized, same crew that will be doing the sun city ultra which at this point I may enter just waiting to see how I go in PE. However the midlands event was superlatively well organized and run. Will do it again at some point.

Awesome event, amazing location.

Road closure needs to be considered though... trucks and traffic on the 3rd lap while lapping slower riders got a bit frustrating / hairy at one point.

Highly recommended - challenging and fair course!
