I was talking to some people on this site about getting a Freeride/downhill forum on this wonderful site to help bring people together who enjoy this growing side of MTB. We see a great need to have a forum like this to create awareness and to help people know where to ride.

what do you guys think ? ? ? ? ?

Well I saw that Greg Minaar and three other blokes are busy setting up a Mtb Park in CT with a cable lift to take the downhillers up and a couple of freeride courses along with a bit of single track, just could not see where exactly it would be. Got the link to their site from PPA I think.. Build a Park in Jo Burg You wil make a killing!Big%20smile

lucky bugger ....

There is a cable car at hartebeespoort dam which is hardly used with a nice stretch of mountain ether side of it to build some killer runs. pretty sure they would make a killing there. ;) maybe Dullstroom. Schoemanskloof, Pretoria.

there is also some people building some DH/FR stuff in the freestate.

What sort of fee do they charge the average Joe to use a downhill run?

To have a professional run with a cable lift etc is bordering on the infrastructure used on the snow ski runs.

This aint cheap, as a civil engineer I did a quick mental (thumb suck) calculation, and I would say to set up a cable lift alone (similar to the one at Hartebeesfontein) would cost at todays building rates approx R8-10 mill. and I think thats been very conservative and very basic.

You would need a lot of cyclists coming through there at say R50 / R60 bucks a pop to be profitable.

Heard a rumor there's a track being build there, and hopefully might get used for the next nationals coming up.

interesting, is that thumb suck including including the buildings at the top and bottom housing the motor, or just the cable towers ? they could always make up the money on food drink parking/ other recreations on the premises. There are different types of lifts as well some just haul you up on a rope. damn makes us look so lazy lol

What about Gilloolys? There was a succesful DH national there recently.

would be good' date=' but i wonder if you could get exclusive use of the hill.

Perhaps not exclusive use of the hill, but just of the DH track, built it up properly.

Is the next DH provincials not at Gilloolys?

Yes, I am talking of a pro lift, with continous wind cables, all suspension, the buildings, towers, motors, cars everything.

Its just a thumb suck, but I cant see coming in much cheaper, I am not too clued up on the differant systems used so I just sort of based it on a ski lift type operation.

Very expensive to build and very expensive to maintain, I dont think it will ever turn a profit here in good old SA.
