Alternative to Go Pro

Hi all

I don't cycle at all.  I have just come to register here now because I need some input from you guys, please.

As much as I want to buy a Go Pro for my husband (both a MTB & road cyclist), I just can't seem to justify the cost.  It's his birthday next month and I want to get him something he'll really like.  The Go Pro is very cool, but so so expensive.

I'm not a fan of Groupon at all. After a few bad experiences, I've vowed to only ever use them if a place that I KNOW is offering something. But I found this:

http://www.groupon.co.za/deals/cape-town/gg-asp-960/59213436?p=9&nlp=&CID=ZA_CRM_1_0_0_82&a=1909&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&sid=d4496fca-6d1b-410a-b184-eda3c1fb03f9&division=cape-town&uh=f4d1dc2b-6f8b-4029-9efe-748e5006c63a&date=20152303&sender=rm&s=body&c=deal_img&d=deal-page&utm_campaign=gg-asp-960-59213436

It looks like a cheaper version of the Go Pro. Has anyone seen it? Does it do more or less the same thing? Or do you think I'd be wasting my money here? If it seems too good to be true, it probably is - right?

The only alternative to a GoPro is a lot of regret, and then just getting a GoPro later.

Why not take a look at the new entry level version, just called a hero I think.

Really?  Why?  Do you reckon that other products are inferior to the Go Pro?   Are they cheap and Chinese-ey?

I'll take a look at the Hero - thanks.

I have a HP Action camera. I bought it from Takealot for R600 with all accessories. I am very happy with it and don't regret not spending R6000 on a GoPro without any accessories.

There are many alternatives to GoPro. Just look under "action cameras" in the classifieds on this site. Opinions are divided on quality, though so it will depend on what kind of quality you want. There are different designs such as the Garmin Virb and the Sony Action cam and there are also many who have the same appearance as the GoPro. None, though, have the same spec as the GoPro although he may not want to film at 120fps. If he just wants to record at normal speed and is not keen for high detail and quality, these are the way to go. I can't speak for the Garmin or Sony although there are reviews on this site for them and I know some people on this site have had issues with mounts of, for example the Hp action cam. A mate of mine has one called ACTC-Hd and that just changes the colour of the film randomly from time to time although it costs only R1500 and the footage is acceptable. The GoPro software combined with its high speed filming allows you to do great slowmo  and it also does time lapses. Not sure if the others do that. I suppose the answer is to decide how technical you want to be and whether you think the extra quality is worth the extra money.

I was very happy with my Sony AV30v until I met a German with a Gopro Hero 4 who recorded video of the same snorkeling (yes that thing were you drift around the sea) session as me. Reviewing the footage side by side on our Samsung phone screens left me feeling very inadequate...

I still feel that the Sony is a fantastic piece of kit, but that GoPro Hero 4 was just in another league.

Yes I agree that the GoPro will be better quality, but my opinion, it's way over priced.

Just be aware that most GoPro's (action cameras) lie in a drawer and stay there - they get used for a few months and that's it. You can only look at so much video footage.

Expensive drawer ornament.

Having said that - would LOVE a GoPro Hero 4.

If you allow that then you only have yourself to blame. It can be used for just so many things and one only needs to be creative. I agree that if you just stick it on your handle bars and record and save then it becomes like watching someone's wedding video but if you use different angles and use it for different uses, then it needn't lie idle.

Check this time laps I did, for example.

Having said that, though, I have a Canon SLR with all the tricks which I mainly use on holiday  now that I ride most weekends so it can happen.

I have HP one as well really happy. But a Gopro would have much better quality.

I hardly paid for the HP so not to bothered. For what I do atm I am happy. I do want a chest strap and Helmet mount option as well just need to sort out my stuff.

If your husband wants quality then go HERO camera R1999 usually. Otherwise I am happy with HP one and most of other makes in this price should be fine. I would not get from groupon tho as per your own experiences.
