Alternative to Go Pro

Hi all

I don't cycle at all.  I have just come to register here now because I need some input from you guys, please.

As much as I want to buy a Go Pro for my husband (both a MTB & road cyclist), I just can't seem to justify the cost.  It's his birthday next month and I want to get him something he'll really like.  The Go Pro is very cool, but so so expensive.

I'm not a fan of Groupon at all. After a few bad experiences, I've vowed to only ever use them if a place that I KNOW is offering something. But I found this:

It looks like a cheaper version of the Go Pro. Has anyone seen it? Does it do more or less the same thing? Or do you think I'd be wasting my money here? If it seems too good to be true, it probably is - right?

i have one of these jobbies, rather keep your R600 and buy your hubby a massage voucher or something.

the video quality is pathetic and the brackets are made of egg shells

I have the hp cam. it does the job. I must say your husband is lucky to have you.

As a tip I suggest you get something like this.

Nothing renders your camera more useless than a warm camera steaming up the inside of its waterproof cover on a cold winter morning

Here is a review of what looks like the cam in question

I agree with many above, go for the base/new Gopro or the Sony if you can justify the price.

The great thing about the Gopro is the variety of mounts, but they are kind of overpriced.

I have a Go Pro (older Hero 2) and a Garmin Virb. The video quality of the Garmin is better than the GoPro, but obviously its not a fair comparison with the GoPro being 4 years older. However the extra features and the ease of use of the Garmin Virb are more useful to me than the slightly better video of the latest Go Pro's.

I had one of these lower cost cameras (SJ1000 - they go under a number of names but essentially the same camera) and it was pretty good.

But after using it for a year I changed to a GoPro. The GoPro is more than just the camera, its the accessories, smart phone apps, editing software and support that make it so much better.

So you might want to start to see if you enjoy these video cameras but in time you might find that you want to move to a GoPro.

I'm a great believer in GoPro's, I've owned them since the first HD Hero was launched, and you cannot match them for overall package. Yes, they are expensive and domestic prices are heavily inflated. If you want to use it to do proper video, absolutely, if you just want to make some home videos, there are many other alternatives. Personally I'd stick with the vanilla Hero. It's stripped of all the fancy stuff, but it will still take decent video.

I've always imported or waited for clearance sales when I bought mine. No ways will I pay full retail.
