Gels and Chews

So having done my first proper MTB race this weekend at Emperors (40km..well 44km).  I packed some in race nutrition not being super fit I knew I would need some energy during the race.  I'm a huge fan of the 32Gi Endure  so took their Gel packs and Sports chews, wasn't sure which one I would need to took both.

Thought i would give a very very basic review of the two.

This Gel Pack

Sucks Balls.  The packaging is supposed to be some no tear environmentally friendly package. What a frikken mission to open. Its like trying to bite through a plastic ruler will sitting on a paint shaker (MTB trail was super bumpy).  I also felt that it didn't pick me up at all and I actually felt somewhat lethargic after taking it. I did drink quite a bit of water with it and waited a while for the pick me up to kick in but just it just didn't work.

On the other hand (Darren) these Energy Chews

Were actually really good.  The pack come with 4 gelatine like blocks covered in a sugar powder.  i bought this lime one which isn't the best flavour and must admit the texture is not for everyone but not too bad at all.  I did find that it did pick up my energy levels quite nicely. I ate one after the first 15km then every 10km after.  Will definitely use these again. Just maybe try another flavour.

The problem I have with any product is how do you gage it against how much training you put in and quality of that training. I would not want to be relying on any product out there to do this for me but rather be a added benefit when racing.

Maybe I'm just cynical but I have never had any 'supplement', at least the ones you can buy at Checkers or DisChem, that has given me any kind of 'kick'. Don't get me wrong I do use some (mostly bananas) but look at it more as a means to keep my energy levels up over an extended time ....

this works well.

The design is somewhat cumbersome. Requires 2 hands. Will make you look fast though for those pre-stage interviews.

yeah I think only stimulants will give you a kick, caffeine, taurine, ecstasy etc.  The above products just put carbs back in, quickly.  I found that I did feel better...less tired after taking them. So they definitely work. Well the chews did.

I will try the honey thing next time if i can find.  Though i read that post on how poeple made their own. will see.  I'll only use a gel or similar for a race over 2 or 3 hours, anything less i think just water and a carb drink is fine.  That is for my current fitness level.

Have you used Ener-Bee honey sachets? I have and it works!

I got some free samples of these, looks like you snap them in half. Just looks like I am going to get my gloves, and everything else covered in honey so haven't tried them yet. Does this happen?

The gels snap open easily when folded in half backward, without mess in my experience. I am having a giggle here picturing the OP trying to chew his way into the sachet. Read the instructions on the back, you won't struggle so much next time.
