Internal Gear Cable Wear - New Trance 2

Recommended Posts

My new Giant Trance 2 developed a ticking sound inside the frame that I could never pin point,

I just returned from a 7 day cycle through the Cederberg and stripped down the bike for comprehensive service.

I found that the rear cable sheath has been chaffed through the plastic outer layer and the steel layer is exposed and was probably slapping and chaffing inside the frame.

How so I prevent that happening again?

I have a new outer sheathe and inner gear cable already cut to length ready to install through the rubber grommets.

I was thinking maybe a cable tie on the two exit points of the fame next to the grommet to keep tension inside the frame?

Any ideas?

What about Heat Shrink?  The stuff the sparkies use and heat it to make a water tight seal.

Comes in different sizes and you can build up the area where the most wear takes place?

My Spez came with a thick foam outer housing that goes around the housing where the cables are internally routed. It seems to do the job very well. No noise and cables are protected. It is almost like insulation material so I am sure you can find it somewhere.

Had the same problem with the Trance internal cables, not to mention the rattling driving me mad!!

Tried the Cable tie trick but did not work that well. Bought some clear soft plastic tubing at the local hardware and slid this over the interior cables. Problem over! If you want to do this without removing the cables, slit the tubing in it's length slip it over the cable and tape ever 10cm,post-2312-0-22017800-1430582722_thumb.jpgpost-2312-0-62924200-1430582755_thumb.jpg

You can also try a few cable ties attached along the length of the housing.  Don't cut the tails off as these then press up against the inside of the tube and prevent the cable from slapping around.
