Sagged / Deflated rear shock.

Hey guys,

Wen't for a ride yesterday, and from the moment I got on the bike something felt strange. I looked down and saw that my rear shock is very compressed. Rode back home, got off and I can with my hand push it in completely.

2 days ago it was fine.

So it clearly has no air in it, but the fact that it happened so suddenly worries me a bit. There was some oily substance on the stanchions (right word?).

I missed last year's service (no pesos), so I'm worried I might have broken it.

Could it be that I can just pump it back up, and it should be good for 1 more medium-hard ride? I entered the Trailseeker race, and I am slightly bummed at missing it. :-/

Sounds like the air sleeve seal has gone or a "stuck down". Not much to do except send it in for a service. PM Droo from Stoke Suspension. He should be able to help.

My guess is it's a fox.

Very common problem, but very easy to fix.

Just google "fox rp suck down"

Will cost you around R200 & half an hour (if you'rea mechanical oriented person)

Just be very careful when removing the air sleeve as it will come off in a hurry.

There are some good youtube vids on the air sleeve service as well.

Good luck

Yoh, that sounds like a golden idea. R200 is better than R800. But. That R200 could very quickly become R200000000 when I cock something up.

I think I would rather get it sorted properly this time, and then slowly learn how to do these things myself properly in future.

I'm bummed that I miss this one race, I don't want to be bitter when I won't be able to ride again this year.

Thanks for the info guys.

Not sure if you can do what I did, but I had the same on my RockShox Monarch RP3 and Chris Willemse Cycles managed to replace it free of charge under warranty for me....still don't know how they managed to do that but hey, I'm not going to ask them either

I'd guess the air sleeve has come unscrewed or there's a leak on one of the air can seals. An air sleeve rebuild should sort it out and is pretty easy to do, but chances are if that's gone you'll need a damper service as well, which isn't a home job.

Best advice, though, is to remove the shock, deflate and dismantle according to the instructions on service.foxracingshox.com (rag through the eyelet before unscrewing - you'll know it when you find it) and check for wear on the damper body, damper shaft and the inside of the air sleeve. If these are all ok, an air sleeve service should sort you out for now, but bring it in when finances allow.
