Although the ladies field was limited this was due to the severity of the track and casualties in practice.

There were about 6 ladies registered in Kath and Jo's category, but a few pulled out.

But that track was gnarly, so big up to all the girls who rode that!!!! Even if they had a small field!

After seeing the photos, getting to the bottom of that thing was a win.

Agreed - so if anyone pipes up and says the chicks dont count because of low rider numbers, I challenge them to go and try ride that track and then comment again ... It was F*%king scary and tough to ride, so anyone who entered and raced deserves everything they got ...

oh and for seeding and race the guys were sent off at 30sec intervals!!!! ...

So there were riders everywhere on track - seeding was fun with people passing you and you passing people ... it was nuts

what in the image tells you that seeding runs were busy!

I watched a helmet cam with one guy who was giving it gas - was passing people by using some craazy lines

and big up to all of you...small field or not - those girls can wear those medals with pride. To go into the middle of europe and come away with some medals is A class

Yep, women had a limited field because the track was so hectic. It was kind of like "you have to be in it to win it", so the actual track limited what women would enter in the first place. I'm proud of myself for getting down it +- 11/12 times without a broken bone, I crashed hard in practice overshooting a jump and got pretty nasty whiplash and a sprained thumb the day before - so I chose to go conservatively after that. Two women had to pull out from injury during practice, and one broke her hand in a car accident the week before so she couldn't ride. It's a track you have to expect to crash on.

Rika had a big off during her seeding run which messed up her wrist and limited her power for the next day. She is really tough and didn't mention how sore she was…she iced her wrist for like 18 hours solid in order to be able to hold onto the bike.

I got taken out by a flipping speedy Frenchman in my seeding run because they only left one minute gaps, he tried to pass me in the bottom third of the track and slammed into my bars and my wrist, it sent him cartwheeling over the bars so I managed to eventually come to a halt and while the marshals told me to go, I chose to wait for about 30 seconds until he pulled himself out of the ravine and found his bike and went - as he would probably have caught me again in the finish chute. I lost a good 40 seconds with that, I am almost sure I would have had a 7:30 not an 8:30 in my qualifier as it's a bit alarming to be dealing with cannonball men slamming into you. I'm not good at being aggressive against other riders to move either.

In my finals run I crashed twice, once before the split and once after and wound up waiting for other riders to get through the tricky steep sections before I committed to the channel - but after crashing twice I knew I would never catch up with Alice Kuhn so I thought I'd rather just let the people in front of me enjoy their ride - I knew I was coming in 2nd anyway by that stage  and it wasn't worth hurting someone or myself by passing in the steep steep steep area.

The biggest stuff up with the women was that they didn't let us ride fastest to slowest, that's what caused a lot of the traffic jams and Rika's injury to be honest - she got distracted by a woman in front of her who took 13 minutes to get down the track - and she wound up kind of flying off track and smashing into a tree. It wasn't either person's fault, but the UCI people were extremely deaf when we asked them the day before to change the order around for the competition. It's bloody dangerous the way they did it.

Anyways, it's steep and crazy and awesome all at the same time. That's what my blog about it said anyway...

Ja it is crazy, the UCI are amendment that GoPro's are a danger to you on your helmet (although they only enforced this ruling 2/3rds of the way into the 1st day of practice), but surprisingly you are in no danger if you take it off and put it in your pocket in the start hut... :whistling:

A number of the girls (not even the Saffa's) asked if the ladies could be run from slowest to fastest (out of age category, to limit the chances of any of the girls being caught by one another)... UCI response "No, it is too complicated"

So, apparently the UCI do not see overtaking on crazy steep slopes as being too dangerous (especially when things get too complicated for themselves)
