Rocky Mountain RSL 970 Pivot Bushings

Does anyone know where one can get the pivot bushings for the Rocky bikes at a reasonable price? I need to replace just two link bushings and don't want to buy a whole new set at a couple of grand cost.

Also does anyone know how often they should be replaced out of interest? I did them all 6 months ago and there is already play in the suspension. It's an expensive service if one needs to do it every month.

I recently replaced my pivot bearings myself. Bearing Man is your friend for this exercise as they will have all the bearings you would ever need. Get the Japanese made bearings, they are more expensive but apparently they last twice as long as the no name Chinese type bearings.

You should only be replacing these bearing maybe once a year, depending on the conditions you ride in.

The Op's bike uses bushings, not bearings.

Not sure if you can get those at Bearing Man?

Would'nt an engineering shop be able to make a set for you?  If it is possible then they might be able to turn a couple of sets for the price of the originals.  Maybe worth looking into.

not sure of a dealer in JHB but if you go the route of having bushes machined the best product to use for this application would be vesconite.

and if you are looking to go this route PM me i can recommend a good machine shop that could do it (the owner also into Mtb so takes good care of what his guys do)

Ah, the joys of owning a Rocky.

Your best bet is to do a pivot bushing service about once a month. You'll need Bel-Ray waterproof grease and lots of patience. If you keep the bushings clean they won't wear nearly as fast.

Often those bushings wear quickly because the seals haven't been installed properly, or just left out, because they're an absolute pig to get in if you don't know how it's done.

As far as alternatives, that's a custom bushing set made by IGUS for RM, and you won't find the plastic bits separately.

Damn. Do you provide this pivot bushing service?

I love my Rocky Element but I concur that one seems to be taken for ride for the privilege to own a RM here in RSA. When I needed a spare rear deraillor hanger I was quote no less than R600. The bike shop next to my inlaws in Ottawa gave it to me for free.

I haven't had issues with the bushings yet but maybe I should bring some over from the family trip next year.

A question to the distributor: What is your business objective behind that? Is RM export pricing forcing you to these prices? This will put people off from buying a Rocky. And it annoys the *&^% out of me! Why are forcing us to go to such extents while it would be more sustainable for both you and us to actually support your local business? Just asking.

If you can get them direct from Canadia for half the price, do it. If they've got the polymer inserts separately, please bring me a million of them.

As for the local guys - their pricing is dictated by their costs. You bringing it over in your luggage vs them moving them over in containers is a vastly different exercise. Also, that kit includes all the nuts and bolts and washers and seals, not just the bushings and seats, which IMO is overkill.

If I were Rocky I'd make 2 levels of kit, one for regular maintenance and one for the full rebuild. Maybe they have their reasons.

Time for one of the local bike mags to do an article on the cheapest bike/components to maintain. This should surely be one of the key considerations when buying a new bike. We read a lot about which bike is best for whatever use, terrain and a whole bunch of other stats but rarely is anything said about costs of maintaining.  Mr Tread??????

Droo, I know the physics of import cost, transport, duties and stock holding cost. But you will stick these small parts into same container as the bikes so no extra cost. And if they have enough import volume to fill one container the cost versus goods value is small.

But yes, I will enquire about the inserts. Let's see what they say ;)
