I just need some advice as i am trying to do this as cost effectively as possible. I have a sram s2200 carbon crank with 64/104 spider. Can i just get a 104 bcd front ring and use it on that spider with the 1x11 cassette and rear derailleur or do i need a different spider to ensure the chain line is correct?

The 11sp cassette usually needs a special free hub body on the hub to accommodate the 10 sprocket.

True, otherwise wait for the XT 11speed cassette that will fit on the existing 10 speed hub.

Reports are that the Sram 11 speed der works fine with this. 11 - 42

But then accept that you will not have as 'wide' a spread of gears as you would with a SRAM cassette?

You right, you have to give up something in a compromise.

Sram Cassette is 10 - 42t

Shimano 11 - 42t.

Not to bad I suppose.

I am a Sram fan but the XX1 and X01 Cassettes prices are horrible, looks like the Shimano XT will be way cheaper as well as not needing a special hub.

One-up is advertising a 45 tooth cassette adapter that will fit on the shimano 11speed cassette . This will give you 11-45 at the rear. In comparison with SRAM 10-42 its range is only 3% less but the price including conversion will still be cheaper than the 11 spd SRAM cassettes. you would run the converted Shimano 11-45 cassette with a bigger front chainring to get similar overall ratios to the SRAM setup.

Been looking at that, think that will be a great setup - good top end plus a nice climbing gear.

Thanks, I am aware of this. Just wanted to check the crank with this post.

The cassette is the most expensive bit in this entire conversion but it seems like technology is starting to trickle down with the X1 cassette. It is still not cheap but hopefully in the near future it will be more affordable.

The new Sram G series due for release any day addresses that exact issue.

'45' just wondering are we not starting to stretch the limits of what rear derailleurs are intended for?

That is likely the reason why they didn't make it 46t or 48t

Was wondering the exact same thing but according to Sram their single speed der`s are designed for that now.
