Indoor power based training and the lack of basic mountainbike skills

I am not very good technically as I ride more Road than MTB and from what I have experienced its not really always about skill.

If you look at Sani2c, its definitely not a technical route. Yes there are a couple of switchbacks which are definitely the "hardest" part of the route.

I think its more of a "dont want to get hurt" thing which I can understand.

However I do ride a SS MTB, but that is for fun only, not everything is a race.

Winter is ideal for IDT's, whichever discipline/s you ride. Skills training is also important, in all disciplines.

to many big ego's out there, all racing for microwaves and fridges.

Just enjoy it, if I have to slow you down why not have a chat to the people around you? u gonna make some new friends.

If you wanna ride the hard core stuff go do it with your mates on a weekend when you not sharing the track with 2500 other riders. the truth is most race are just oversubscribed.

I've only been mtb'ing for 18 months or so, but almost all of it in the Tygerberg area with lots of single-track, some technical sections, few hairy parts etc.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly skilled, but I'm appalled at the general lack of basic skills of the average rider when doing races. Last weeks Darling Brew is a good example. The ST was terribly slow and frustrating. I was hovering in the middle of the field.

And then everyone climbs faster than I do...so I'm screwed both ways... :)

With the increased uptake of mounting biking it's possibly skewing more to the corporate types with long work hours, busy lives, etc.. So, maybe it's also a time thing?

From my own perspective, it's dark when I leave for work and now that it's winter, it's dark when I get home. So, getting to trails to practise MTB skills during the week is not possible. That leaves me with weekends, but not always, given that cycling isn't my only hobby.
