Which Multisport GPS watch?

Jigghead, as I am using your old Fenix 2, this one is for you, but perhaps somebody else can also help? Before a run, my Fenix takes ages to locate satellites. Somehow I don't think it is fun to stand around in the cold waiting at least 5 minutes before I can get going. DCRainmaker says something about setting your location on GarminConnect to speed up the process of finding satellites. Anybody that has done it and did it help?

Thanks.

Hi Christine, how much trees and buildings are around you when you try to get satellites?

When starting my run at home, there are a lot of trees and I am also against the northern slope of Meintjieskop. Might be the problem. But sometimes my run starts off at University of Pretoria campus that is much more open but then it can also take a few minutes before locating satellites.

What I find works is to only power on the watch once outside.  If you power it on indoors it gets confused.

imagine trying to explain this to someone 100 years ago.

:)

I ordered my f3 Sapphire from Clever Training in the US. The thing went pear shaped and was swapped out locally for a new unit with no questions asked. Garmin was not concerned with the origin of the unit at all. Their service and backup is awesome!

This is very good news... I ordered mine from Clever Training too, should have it in a week :-)

And it does not take 10 + days...

i spent the weekend looking at this watch.

I bought it at due south for 9500.

Of all the places i looked at, evobikez was the cheapest.

But...with due south i walked into the store. Paid. Walked to a jeweller and resized it immediately.

went for a leisurely beer whilst i fiddled with it and got it setup.

All in less than 2 hours.

Yes...i could have saved money by buying online.

But i enjoyed my day.

Hi Christine,

I hope you're enjoying the f2. I had a lot of remorse after the f3 gave me trouble to start off with.

I never set my location on Garmin Connect, but I did notice that about once a week after doing a sync with Garmin Connect on my iPhone, it would do a satellite update which took a bit of time. I did a bit of research and it appears as if the 'absolute location' of the satellites compared to the same spot on the earth changes and this update just served to realign the positions as far a the unit itself is concerned.

I found that the closer I got to 'updating satellite' time, the longer it took to get a fix. It also took a little longer when starting from a new location. The usual buildings in the way, cloud cover, trees etc. would also serve to delay satelite fix. Are you starting from a built up area or under the cover of a building? With that unit, I used to walk over the road to the empty plot across from me if it was taking 'too long' but either way, it never really took longer than 30-60secs which is about how long it took to do my token warm up stretches. I think when we spoke you said you were using a Samsung? I'm sure the app should do the same thing whichever smart phone you're using?

Hi Wayne

Understand your day and shopping experience 100%. That is why you were happy to pay R1k more and to collect it in store etc.

However- I fail to see how clevertraining.com vs any other online store give a better shopping experience. Just my 2c...

Clever name they have - pardon the pun! :)

Oh and of you ever visit the Cape - For R1k extra I would have booked you lunch at Signal Gun restaurant while we took your watch to the jeweller to have the wristband sized:)

Hi Jigghead. Thanks for the reply! Yes, I am enjoying the f2. No remorse! Since I got it from you, I have only been downloading files to WKO+ via a cable (offline procedure). Never done any synchronising or anything fancy. It is then definitely time for Garmin Connect.

Ya, the anticipation killed me waiting for it to arrive. At the time though, the Sapphire was not available here and there was no indication of when it would be. DCRainmaker also has a 10% discount coupon which I used, coupled with the zero cost for shipping within the USA and being bought back by a friend, it was cheaper than I've seen it here, anywhere.

As I mentioned before, the original unit gave me a few issues and Garmin SA swapped it out no problem.
