Hi All,

Anyone bought one recently ?

Got a good deal ?

I think I will need about 2500 for the basic "hero"  with a mounting ...

Any other thoughts or advice?

Don't forget about the time and effort it takes to actually edit a video.... not to mention the cost of kit and software required from time to time...

Gopro black + would be a great way to start- good quality and frame rate. The camera bounces a hell of a lot when when riding so a higher frame rate helps smooth things out- also looks good in slowmo.

I got the biggest shock of my life when i tried to edit a short vid on my pc- it took almost 30 mins to convert the clip- gopro recommend an i7 for editing which seems pretty crazy.

+1 for The basic Hero (R2k at Incredible Connection atm) or pay a bit more for a pre-loved one in the classifieds.

Get either a chest mount or a helmet mount (the latter just always look bit...funny). The footage of a bar-mount will be more shaky than a Bourne Identity movie

My sister brought one in for me from America in Dec Cost me R3000 for the 3 Silver. At the time they were R5000 in SA. Never used it though. Selling it now with accesories and 32GB SD card for R3000. Check under classifieds.

I've considered getting a gopro too but know too many people with gopro's in their cupboard gathering dust.

after the initial novelty has worn off and you realise no one cares about your mediocre training ride footage, the last nail in the coffin is the laborious task of editing. so it ends up in the cupboard.

keep this in mind:

i. after sifting through hours and hours of footage, you can finally start your edit.

ii. for any decent video with music and proper editing, you are looking at 1 hour of editing per one minute of actual final video.

now ask yourself, "is myname jeb corlis or steve peat?"

because if it's not, chances are that no one out there will want to see the video you poured hours and hours into editing. and, if you didn't edit it, they (including yourself) will want to see it even less.

save your money.

ps. I know you are going to go ahead and ignore uncle Sadam's advice and buy one anyway, so please for the love of all things holy, if you do get a gopro with a helmet mount, learn to keep your head still

My sister's fiance edit's Jeb's longer movies.

True story.

This is a lot more difficult than expected. The urge to look left and right while flying thru an intersection is massive. The master of keeping a still head is Lucas Brunelle. Gotta look at some of his videos.

What's up!

The Hero is a really great entry level option and gives kick ass quality for a camera this price. It's also your only option within this price point as the next level us is close to R5k.

The Hero on its own sells for R2,195 but don't forget that you absolutely need a memory card to operate it so a good deal is the "Hero + 32Gb SD card at cost" which is R2,445. The memory card you'll get is the Samsung Evo 32Gb which is recommended for GoPro and is the right speed card for this camera. Free express courier delivery in SA too.

To get started with editing try downloading the GoPro Editing Suite and use their template edits. This will tell you what kind of shots to put where and how long they need to be. They then throw on some music and boom - you're done!

For anyone struggling to edit their footage you should use the Highlite Feature on the Hero 4 which tags the best parts of your video to save you sifting through hours of boring stuff to find the best parts.

Or, download the Antix App which is a super sick alternative which works with any Hero 3 or 4 camera to automatically edit footage

Once linked wirelessly to the GoPro, the phone records the movement data of the rider. Detecting when something exciting is being done in the session, for example a jump, spin, or just a big turn, the movement data then pairs with the footage and is automatically cut up into a highlight reel.

Once the footage has been recorded it is automatically updated to the rider's profile page on the Antix website. They have their own community which is cool but getting the automatically edited footage is the best thing about this app. Do it.

I hear your argument and agree with it - but have one variance:

I give a damn about the video - and to be honest, I don't really care who else cares.  I've watched my Sani and W2W footage (and other stuff) on a number of occasions.  Not because it's great footage or I look like KoolHarvey - just for a great reminder of what great rides they were (and with a cool soundtrack it's a good excuse to listen to some tunes).

And when I'm 89 and can't get out of my rocking chair  I'll have something to look back on (assuming I can convert it into the holographic format used in 2049).  And for that reason alone I'm glad I own one, use it and spend a few hours editing the footage.

I agree with the sentiments of Dubber. You can also make silly little videos of you and your mates messing around like this one i posted the other day

lol.  Tom will learn not to wear cut off arm shirts when out on the bike.  Great for the tan line but makes a mess when you come off - and you will come off, no matter how good you (think) you are...
