BB30. Remove bearing from frame cup help

Good morning.

My bike is a Cannondale Flash with a BB30. I want to replace the bearings and all the instruction videos on the web show how to remove the frame cups containing the actual bearings but do not show how to get the bearings out of the frame cups.

I am about to spend the morning machining a Mandrel to use in a press to get the bearing out the cup.

Is there an easier way?

Much appreciated

The BB bearings of the flash don't sit in cups they are in the actual BB shell of the frame.  You can tap them out carefully with a wooden dowel and a hammer going around the bearings a bit at a time.  If you are not comfortable with this then you will need to take it to your lbs for them to use a bearing puller.

Hammer and a steel rod, seeing you going to replace the bearing any way!

I hammered the end of the steel rod so it formed a slight flange, makes it easier to hook the edge of the bearing.

That's correct, just make sure you tap on the actual bearing and not the inner lip of the shell that houses them. If you're putting in new bearings, make sure you use quality grease and most importantly have a proper bearing press and cups to pull the bearings into the frame straight. Don't try tap the new bearings back in the same way you tapped the old ones out, as this will generally cause the creak/knock sound that Cannondales have an unnecessary reputation for. If they're done properly you won't have any noises.

Make a puller. And while you're about it, make a press to fit the new bearings too. Cannondale BB30s don't like being smacked around.

This is of course assuming you don't like creaks and/or trashing your frame. If you dont mind either, then get a hammer and bash away.

I made a puller and press for my Dales using an assortment of threaded bar and some big washers. It was an easy afternoon's work, now removal and replacement is a 5 minute job

Thanks for the reply's chaps. My BB30 is configured with a cup assembly.

I made a tool this morning and the photos should explain the thought process. post-43795-0-51331100-1435569447_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-51331100-1435569447_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-12053000-1435569447_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-76700300-1435569450_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-15522500-1435569453_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-78659200-1435569456_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-02604600-1435569456_thumb.jpgpost-43795-0-32801600-1435569457_thumb.jpg

Sorry for the order but I think you get the idea.

It works very well and all forces are aligned with the direction you are trying to move the bearing.

Thanks for the input
