Have you ever cycled from Morogoro to Tanwat before ? Or from middle of a sugar estate in Mozambique to Xai-Xai ? Then it is a very nice to have . Then all of a sudden the bonus bit happens to be the HR and cadence goodies .

Spinnekop: Me to Im saving for a Power Meter now to get better, not incase I get lost. Also they seem heavy and Im a weight freak so it will never work!

The only nice thing about them is you can go for a ride with your buddies in a new area and the you can go back there later on your own without getting lost.

Still too big for my liking and still not enough batry life. Unless they have doe wonders, the average Joe would only just get through an Epic stage and then the batery would be pap. Then you need to finde somewhere to charge it and, and, and.

When one pine tree looks like another pine tree, it is pretty useful to know how you found that awesome piece of singletrack in the middle of a "exploratory" ride in the forest.  GPS has its benefits.  Whether it needs to be on your watch/cyclecomputer is a really a waustion of how many gadgets you are willing to take with you.

I am not bashing anyone for buying these products but I dont see why they are spending huge money on something that doesnt' date=' to me, seem neccasary. So many people had garmins or whatever on their bikes on Epic yet my HR Monitor told me the exact info on the climbing I needed and it it what? Half the price? The routes are clearly marked and if you racing the marshalls tell you were to go and if you doing a training ride you normally ride with people and I doubt it that they dont know where you going?? You dont go "Lets just ride  got a garmin we wont get lost"

Yes go to JHB from Cape Town and I need to get to Standard bank, it will come in handy-maybe but the world wasnt lost without them before.

Do these things tell you your HR, power and stuff like that??

Colonel I actually agree with you if the person is not actually using it. However there are some VERY nice things that you can do with it:

1. Wireless Cycling computer (Speed, cadence, altimeter)
     So far nothing unusual
2. Heart Rate monitor
Still no different to Polar options etc.
3. Powermeter

Can be used as headunit for a few types of hub
4. GPS

Obviously the GPS part is what it does best. I use mine for the following:

1. Record your training data (Power,HR,speed, altitude,GPSlocation)
2. Race against your previous TrainingData (You can race the data for the same section of road, so you get teh right pace up hills etc.)
3. Integrate with software (Google Earth and others) for making maps and GeoLocating pictures etc.

4. Best of all on this new one (705) is the the ability to create a network of routes and tracks, that can be made autorotable (lots of other software and tools required, but I've done a few and it's do-able).

For example, you save many tracks of rides in your area, then you make the Autoroutable map. In doing this you generate a network of routes, divided into sections between points. You also set the speed for each section (part of the autorouting) and you then use your pc (or Edge705) to plan a route before your ride, and the ETA for this route would be based on your previous rides (Average or best time could be used)

I've got one for Stellenbosch, that works on a Nuvi. Now I can put it on an Edge.

Bear in mind that it is only compatible with the SRM and the Quark (when it comes out). If it was compatible with Poertap I probably would be tempted!

I know that the MTB guys really love them.  There must be thousands for KM's of track and offroad around Magaliesburg etc.  The guys all download the planned route to the unit and go riding.  It's not a big problem if some of the guys are a bit slower, they can go at their own pace and not get lost.

I've used my 305 for road rides as well.  If I'm planning a ride of a certain distance I can plot it out with the mapping software, check the distance, download the route to the unit and go riding.

Bit like a cell phone.  When it first came out it was just a very expensive toy which we had lived without for a long long time, now they are indispensible.

I'd to scared to use it - Imagine you take a tumble and put a rock through the screen, besides who's gonna ride the bike while you are busy navigating the space shuttle !!LOLLOLLOL
