I always thought this would be my last race in EL. Five is enough....but...

It is a very honest course. You do the training you get the time. No free ride in EL.

Still believe I have a PB in me...maybe just one more

You know you want to, and besides next year is no 10

I have also done 5 and I have decided to take a break from EL for a while. My family is in desperate need of a December holiday without 5 am bikes/runs/swims and for me the event has lost its excitement. I am looking forward to Ironman in April and Durban in June. I am hoping that Durban takes EL's place on my calendar.

My race report, after having some time to digest everything: Race week did not go as planned, as I came down with a stomach bug on Wednesday, which only felt better on Friday. I tried to stay hydrated as much as I could up to Sunday. Swim went well. The current coming back was strong but I finished the swim in 34 min something. Bike felt good, but I totally stuffed my pacing going out and turned on 2 hrs! I still do not know what the hell I was doing for 45km. My legs started to show signs of cramping on that last hill before entering town. A sign of things to come...Finished the bike in just under 3:20. Coming out of transition I needed a 1:55 run to get sub 6, which was within reach as running is my strongest discipline and my target was about 1:50 odd. First 4 kms felt really awesome and then the cramping started. From km 5 to 21 I was running/walking. Never have I experienced cramping like this. My quads "locked" at times and I was forced to walk. In the end did not get close to 6 hrs and finished in 6:17. Very disappointing given the training hours I put in.

I took a week's rest and now training for IM is on again.

Durban 70.3 does not excite me with so many athletes on that course. The course is great just too many athletes. Prefer TriRock Durban.

Sorry to hear about the cramps. You beat me by a minute!

We did have Protein Recovery available in the Final Aid station tent, unfortunately many athletes became a bit distracted by the beer and massage tents on their way to Final Aid...

Yeah... I even forgot to pick up my shirt!

Here is another one: Joe Friel speaks of a "breakthrough" session/event which moves your fitness through a barrier/plato. The weekend before EL my itinerary was 2.5km swim/22km run/120km bike. I was completely smashed after that. This weekend I did 3km swim/24km run/120km cycle and I'm not even stiff.

For me, doing EL is obviously a good thing.

What time does the race normally start? Trying to figure out if I'll make my return flight home.

Train harder and you will :)

Seriously, it's a rolling start, depending on you swim ability from 7:00 onwards...

Should be ok if the race starts a 7:00 :)

My flight back is at 18h00 so I need to be at the airport at 17h00.

no matter what time you finish remember that transition only opens for bike check once the last athlete is home (bike leg) and the race committee finalised all the admin. This is despite the advertised times (usually 14:00)

bike check out can take anything for 30 to 90 minutes.
