ANOTHER 1x11 Question

Please, before been slaughtered and cursed for YET ANOTHER 1x11 question please just hear me out...

I'm currently running on a 3x10 setup for a couple of years now and with time getting stronger and stronger on the climbs (not using the granny anymore  ) and now thinking of going 1x11

Now... 3x10 on a 11-34 (currently)

11-34T (Shimano) 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 26 30 34

1x11

Shimano XT M8000 (11-42t)   11 13 15 17 19 21 24 28 32 37 42

Keep in mind that my middle ring currently is a 32T and if changing 1x11 front will also be 32T

My question now,(and excuse me if this might sound like a stupid question) but will it be easier on the climbs now when running on the 37 and 42 at the back? I know cadence and speed will obviously be affected...

Or am i just thinking and talking a lot of twak here?

If you currently riding up the hills on your 32 in the front and 34 in the rear, then yes the 37 and 42 will feel easier as it is lighter gearing.

If you however want to compare how the new granny gear(32(front)-42(rear)) will compare to your current extreme granny(assuming 24(front)-34(rear) then use a tool like this:

You will then be able to see how the gearing matches up.

Short answer. Yes it will be a lot easier.

With both a 32 and a 34 chain ring. You're currently running your easiest gear at 32:34. On 11x it will be 32:42, which is just over 20 percent lighter, or 2 gears. So you can basically go to a 36 or 38 chain ring for a similar low gear.

Not if he lived in Cape Town.....but he doesn't....phew !

1x11 gearing with a 11-42 cassette and using a 32t front chainring will be easier in lowest 2 gears when compared against your 11-34 cassette with middle 32t chainring.

However, it will not be as easy as your current lowest possible gear using 24 or 22 granny ring at the front and 34 rear. You will effectively lose your current lowest gear if using a 24t granny ring or the lowest two ratios if using a 22t granny

What do you mean?

I live in Gansbaai and ride quite a lot in the Western Cape areas...

36 or 38 (upfront) anywhere below TM, Rhodes Mem, in and around Tokai, Stellies, Durbanville etc will see you do A LOT of walking......Maybe on the flats in Gansbaai sure.

Yes it will be easier,

get 1x10 alot cheaper.

34 tooth front with a 11-36 rear and you good to go. :) :)

I had exactly this setup. Easy to deal with and overcome the slightly heavier gearing. the only reason I have 11 speed is because I had the groupset from a previous build. Else I'd have stayed with the 11-36 cassette

Nooo ways... Not going to kill myself. Going to stick to the 32T upfront.
