Hi all,

I'm looking at upgrading to a 2016 Merida Big Nine 500 within the next week or so and would like a bit of advice on if i'm making a good choice?

I do quite a bit of single track riding and wanted to know if the ergonomics of the bike will be suited for this? I'm 1.8m and weigh in at 80Kg.

Also is it better to look at going tubeless from the start?

comments from the Hub are always greatly appreciated!

Tubeless always the best, I own a 2012 Big nine 500 Ht and a 2015 Ninety-nine 600 full susser. Moneywise I believe at the time I bought both new, I couldn't have gotten better specced at the price. It all depends on specs at the time I guess.

Merida is always a good bang for your buck bike. I just sold mine to make way for my anthem. But loved it, was light, geometry was great and it's a solid frame. However, moving over to giant, and spending a lot of time researching different bikes, u can't just pick a bike based on its spec necessarily. You have to feel good riding it, even if it's around the car park outside the shop. Further more, u need to know where you will be riding and what you want out of your bike. Definitely go tubeless, best call I ever made. Good luck

I have the 2013 Big Nine 500 - Agree with BSG, at the time 'bang for buck' - right now though I would look at Silverback to compare - great spec, nice bikes - similar pricing - otherwise you may want to revise your budget upwards.

Hope this helps.

As Asroc says, the Silverback brand is very good, normally priced almost the same as the Merida but most of the time, better specced. Both my Merida's came with Alex rims with Merida tyres opposed to the Ztr rims with Maxxis tyres which the Silverback's come with. Here already one can look at a +-R5 to R6k saving for when one wants to upgrade the wheels and tyres.
