Weeping tyre

That tyre looks kaput.  When my tyres get like that they also start "weeping" from all the small hole  the thorns etc have made previously.

I don't think it is shot, or at least should not be. There are no holes in the tire, the sealant actually penetrates through the rubber. I have ridden this brand of tire before until the knobs starting wearing out on the side tread, and the side wall started perishing and leaking sealant through the side wall. The tire does not lose any pressure over a couple weeks. Only the centre knobs in the tire are showing signs of wear. I will replace it next before Sani.

The tire started leaking like this after less than 8 months from new. I think this is a defect with the tires. This tire was put on brand new on Jan 2015. My son does not ride much, maybe once a week.

Is the heat the culprit?

I dont think so. More likely old sealant. The latex and a filler is suspended in a liquid. Once the latex and filler have congealed only the liquid is left. When it leaks through punctures or a porous casing it does not carry enogh latex and filler to seal the hole.

Fresh sealant should help but that much weeping, even over the tread area, is a sign of too little rubber used in manufacturing - possibly for weight saving or the rubber did not properly flow and seal the fabric plies during moulding.

Try add fresh sealant....then pump to a high pressure and go for a short ride to spread it all around. Leave overnight then reduce pressure to normal. This will slightly shrink the pores onto freshly congealed sealant and may give a longer lasting fix.

My previous house, the bikes lived in the garage. The garage was extremely hot during summer. Current house, bikes live in spare room which also gets crazy hot, particularly during this past heat wave.

Noticed that in between rides (only a day or two) the tyres lose a lot of pressure. Not weeping but they get much softer than "normal".

Nope, my bike is kept in a room which has constant temp year round < 20 deg C

The sealant i used (Doc Blue cough cough Stans actually) was a new bottle i bought with the tyre.... not sure how long the LBS had it though....

I think your theory on the amount of rubber is true, good tip will try that top up / high pressure then back to normal trick

New tyre (RR tubeless easy, snakeskin)

I briefly worked in a tyre factory. The manufacturing processes are complex and there is a lot more manual work than you might think. Lot of room for error. Tyres that leak through the main tread layer when brand new.....not great.

Even my much maligned Spez tyres don't do that when new but they do eventually start to sweat through the sidewalls.

If I was paying Schwalbe prices and got this result I'd be a bit pissed off.

Sooo you saying its a manufacturing problem... ?

I suspect. Part of the problem is also customers who want lighter tyres and prepared to pay extra for it. Who wouldn't jump on that bandwagon? Especially when I can make even more money by selling you a sealant to do the job of the extra rubber that I didn't put into the tyre in the 1st place.....

As you can see, I'm a cynic [emoji12]

I admit to going online and checking the weight of each option before actually going out and buying....silly hey considering how much dirt / mud collects on a tyre

But yes that's the nature of the beast and marketing

And considering the 60ml or more of sealant you use per wheel adds back at least 120g to your tyre weight....
