I'm currently looking to buy my first MTB, and while browsing Gumtree I came across this bike for R10k:

http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/eastern-pretoria/merida-matts-tfs-400/1001448405940910178177809

As I'm doing with all bikes at the moment, I Google it to get some specs, when lo and behold:

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/74234-2010-merida-matts-tfs-xc-400-d/

It was advertised on Bikehub for almost half the price almost 2 years ago... Either it was under-priced then, or it's seriously over-priced now.

I guess the moral of the story (especially for a new buyer) is to be really careful, lest you get taken for a ride (and not the good kind!)

Is a free market.. and if people do not like how things are done, then they do not have to buy here... there is always your LBS, gumtree, OLX and even ebay to name a few!!

I know people in the UK who do similar on ebay as a sideline business (and do very well out of it), buy on ebay and then resell, lots of items are on auction so you can get a real bargain and then have the luxury of selling at a fair price not via an auction.... it is so much of a business sideline you can get ebay sniper programs to bid on your behalf right up to the last second before the auction closes, you just put in your max bid and the sniper will automatically up your bid for you if you are outbid up to your limit.  Don't believe me just google ebay sniper.  Here is one http://auctionsniper.com/

It does not only happen here, but everywhere... it is a fact of life, so suck it up and move on

if you missed out on a bargain, then tough... perhaps you will be quicker on the next one

....you must act more quickly....like a sniper

If something is at the right price for a second hand item I will buy it. If you are going to try and flip it and sell it at the new price - 15/20%, I will not even look at the add. If everyone stops buying overpriced stuff, someone is going to sit with a garage full of unwanted cycling parts.....
