I must admit that I am a little perturbed reading about 8 year old Burry Stander protégé's. I really hope my son enjoys things like cycling, athletics, rugby, cricket etc.at that age rather than be focussed on competition.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but shouldn't an 8 year old be building box ramps in the driveway and try jumping them with his BMX?

I understand what you saying but it's not the 80s anymore people are learning very young and you have to in order to compete at the levels that they are today he has the balance of being competitive and having fun, xc and mx are his competitive sports hence the reason for looking for a "racing spec" bike if I can say that this has gone completely off topic thank you for all your responses Myles I think that is the way forward will start looking at my options

you may have to look for a while. A lot of XS 26ers still have pretty tall head tubes, which means that his bars will be too high. But you also don't want to be to low, as a higher cockpit (relative to us folk) inspires confidence... Good luck, dude.

For what it's worth - it may be worth looking into something like a dirt jump or slopestyle frame instead of a dedicated XC frame. Reason being that the head angle is a little bit more relaxed, which automatically means that the front end will be lower with, say, an 80mm fork, when compared to an XS XC bike.

Something like the Trek Ticket, or the Blackmarket (BlkMrtk) Killswitch

of course, that takes it into a different category & cost bracket entirely, but it's something that would stay with him for a while.

There's also the 4x bikes, which are pretty much Slopestyle bikes anyway...

Damn right it is not the 80's anymore. We had respect back then (it was klapped into you). And us kids were killing it on bmx's. You were damn lucky to have a bike. Nothing like the snotnosed stamping their feet these days.

An 8year old shouldn't be competitively doing anything. That should start much later in his life. Let alone for "needing" a R7000 or R10 000 bike. Sheesh, entitlement starts very early these days. Definitely not the 80's anymore

Not sure what races there are for sub-10's at the moment that would warrant such a bike, tbh. Should tell him to klap the okes on his BMX... :)

I've seen Ike Klaasen's (u13 dh world champ) enduro/trail bike. Xs 26er intense spider with proper 24inch wheels.both him and his brother have this setup. When they outgrow the 24s,simply pop on 26ers.

Talk to Ryan Pmb adout a 14" on one inbred 26er frame.

Guys, respect each other's parenting decisions. If the OP wants to buy his kid a nice bike, let him enjoy the ride.
