I was reading this story in the US Sports Illustrated, about the rehabilitation? of Michael Phelps, and it made me realise what a lax attitude we (Saffers, and Aussies and NZs) have wrt alcohol.

Was interresting to see how the authorities deal with drunk driving here in Germany.  We had a youngster here  who had a little accident with his car soon after we got here.  He did not even crash into any other vehicles.  He just drifted off the road and scraped the barriers that damaged the body work of the car a bit.  Police was very quickly there and they tested him and he was over the limit by quite a bit.

Apart from having to sell the car as the insurance did not pay for repairs as it was his negligence and a 3000€ fine (that is why he had to sell the car to cover all costs and legal costs), he also had his license suspended.  He got handed a suspended sentence and during the next 12 months the police can phone him any time and then he needs to report to the local police station within 30 mins for a breatheliser test.  He is not allowed drink alcohol for the next 12 months.

Flipping Awesome ...... and it is awesome not because they are fining him for a "small" incident, but they are hitting him for what could have been an incident that cost someone else their life/lives due to his negligence of driving under the influence.

Suspension of license and liability for repairs I agree with. The breathalyzer spot check is ludicrous in my opinion, particularly given that Germans have such a drinking culture. The point is not that drinking is being punished (or at least it shouldn't be given that it's perfectly legal and arguably encouraged), it's drinking and driving. Driving while texting is arguably as dangerous as driving drunk but I don't think anyone disagrees that stopping someone texting for 12 months would be a meaningful or proportionate punishment.

That would certainly reduce the no. of driving and texting drivers!

Bottom line is that a car is a huge mass moving at speed. This mass when not under control, can seriously maim or kill persons.....speeding, texting, etc.

There will always be real accidents where something is missed by someone causing an accident, but there are far too many that are caused by negligence, negligence that gets swept under the carpet as being called and "accident"

What song will you sing if that texting or alcohol impaired driver "carmageddoned" one of your family?

If one cause  harm or death do to negligent or irresponsible behaviour while driving a car, regardless with drinking or texting or whatever, they should pay the price.

It can even be someone that did something as mundane as not stopping at the stop sign that kills you child.

This will send the message to everyone.

Sure.  But it is such a hassle that people simply make sure they sleep over or someone is nominated to stay sober to drive them back.

There will be no response from pp probably because they don't take it seriously. Saffa mentality says that no one was harmed therefore it's one for the family album
