Hi Hubbers

we are a cycling family of five I have a 6 year old boy, who rides his 20" Spez hotrock like a demon I also have 4year old twin boys who I now need to buy bikes for

Question is what bikes to buy do not want to buy Makro ***

Spez is crazy pricey so do I buy

Titan Hadres

Silverback?

Momsen

Looking for bikes which are good quality relatively light and below 3K each

Thanks

Wayne

EDIT: Scrap that - the Momsen JSL16 looks like a proper little ripper, and the geo is mostly the same between the Momsen & Silverback, but the Spaz has the longest top tube at 395mm vs 380mm & 375mm.  At this age, a longer top tube is critical, with a lower but not too low front end.

The Silverback & Momsen come with v brakes whereas the Spaz is still a coaster brake with u-brakes.

Spaz

As does the Silverback Spyke...

Momsen has the longest wheelbase of between it and the Spaz.

Not sure of the spaz's wheelbase. Also seems as if the Silverback's geo measurements on the site are a bit off, as it measures the ETT to a vertical line drawn from directly over the end seat tube, rather than to the point where a horizontal line from the head tube and a line drawn through the centre of the seat tube would intersect. Leads me to believe that the SB measurement is actually longer than they say it is.

IE: - Looking at measurement B in both pics. Top is Momsen (and correct way of determining effective top tube length) bottom is silverback. So I think the Silverback is actually longer than they say it is. Which is a good thing

thanks and what about the Titan Hadres

That "suspension fork" on the front makes it weigh 15-20% more than the others. And they don't work at all. It's simply an anchor.

Plus, the top tube seems SUPER short compared to the others. Have a look here as to why that's a bad idea... If it is (and it just looks like it is, Titan don't give the numbers so it may just be a trick of the eyes) it'll be super unsteady and just not good. Not as bad as some of the supermarket bikes, which have even shorter top tubes, but nah. Don't touch it.

This one? Avalanche Bolt? If so, looks pretty good, on the face of it. Can't find any Giant Avalanche 16" bikes...

The one thing I have learnt about kiddies bikes, having gone through the process from little12 inch thingies to their first adult size bikes, is to keep it as simple as possible. Stay away from suspension (and possibly gears) before you get to the real bikes (or at least up to the 24 inch wheel size). It only ads weight, which there is already too much of. It doesn't work because it is crap quality and the kid is too light anyway to make it work.

  • 4 weeks later...

Got my son a Titan Hades 2014 with handle gear shifts and disc brakes. Gain in confidence because of stopping power and ease of gears, whilst instantaneous.

Was a very good buy
