Broken chain

To be honest here, a chain breaking is a fairly common occurrence due to a number of different factors. The one that made yours break? No one will be able to prove it.

I think you're being a bit ridiculous by asking for a new chain from SRAM. Just buy one and move on with life.

A manufacturing default caused me quite a lot of money, a broken speedometer and a bend brake lever, although that doesn't sound like much to you, for some guys that is a lot of money!

Can you explain exactly how you have come to that conclusion so confidently and how you will convince them? #EkVraMaarNet

First problem - how do you know that this chain had a manufacturing default which caused the break? Were you in a cross chain gear ratio? Was the chain running in the correct direction? Can you be certain you didn't install the quick link correctly? The SRAM links are not reusable and they are directional too.

Please do not mistake my post for a lack of sympathy - I have fallen victim to the very same incident you have. However, I later found out it was a bike shop mechanic who had installed it incorrectly. I have since installed, cleaned, and maintained all of my own equipment, and any faults with the drive chain have been purely my fault. I feel this will likely be the same scenario.

Good luck on the desired outcome with this situation, but I'm simply preparing you for the fact that you might just be wasting a lot of people's time with this request.

Sram may (and most likely will) turn around and say that because you used a shimano cassette then that is the cause...or go the route of the "unqualified installation"...Remember they have very highly paid lawyers that will fight this point that even tho it works - they will argue that point...IMHO (and like Drago points out above) that unless you can prove beyond reasonable doubt that there was a latent defect in the BEFORE the installation of said chain then you may just be wasting everyone's time.

Read the fine print of the limits and liabilities (drawn up by the over paid lawyers) under the warranty policy before going any further...also it depends how far you want to poke - to get lawyer-ed up will cost more than a new chain and computer.

Yes, brand new XT cassette, the whole drivetrain is new. I replaced everything when I did the 1x10 convention, because everthing was 70% worn, and I didn't want to mix that with new and old parts.

New drivetrain, broken chain, eish!

If you ask SRAM nicely, maybe someone will give you a new chain "ex gratia" (ie no admission of fault). But it was a Shimano cassette so that leaves lots of wiggle room for them to get out of it.

Maybe it was something to do with the 1x10 conversion. Like the chain climbed off the chainring and self destructed, or the links got out of phase with a narrow/wide profile chain ring. Lots more wiggle room.

I guess you could get a another master link, patch your broken chain together and go cycling again. But carefully, at least till you have had a chance to test out the rest of your new drivetrain.

Too many questions - ifs and buts.

Just go to Sram and tell them what happened.

You never know you might be surprised.

Most of you know that it is not rocket science to fit a chain.

10 to 1 there was an issue with the chain - kom stry nou.

Good pr they will replace the chain.

SRAM just replaced the chain, with no question asked, they took the old chain to run some tests. They replaced it with a 1071, which is better than the 1051 I had.

Shoutout to the great service with SRAM and Tool Up cycles!

I will continue supporting SRAM after this!
