The motorbike argument is not valid bud. People attach value to what they feel is worth the work they have to put in for the joy theu get out(and of course their interests). If you use that argument then i can say 150 million is way to much for a painting that just hangs on a wall and i can print one that looks exactly the same for R20.

Bikes of 100k, like the Canondale at CWC for 145k is a bit ridiculous because i don't believe that the R&D and the material costs get even close to that. If you look at a bike that has the same parts but a different (also carbon frame), or previous year model for half the price with nothing changed it shows me that people pay to show off their new toy to their friends.

BUT that being said. New tech makes a huuuge difference, and even more so for pros. Remember these bikes are made for the guys who win a race by 1 or 2 seconds some times. These days everyone has the same, nutrition, training tech, etc so every single minute advantage is worth any amount of money for them.

As for the original poster. Market dictates the price. A 26er is worth alot less here in SA than in Europe and Aus for instance, because we are snobs and always want the best to show off with. And that bike isn't worth more than 5 maybe 6k.

Exactly my point.

One of the major factors is warranty.

The warranty is only extended to the original owner, so if you buy a bike that is 6 months old you need to know that you are not getting a warranty with it regardless of how new it is.

That's is why I will be insuring it....[emoji6]

I don't get why people are soooo obsessed with warranties. I'm 110kg and ride black red whatever runs and jumps and i fall hard, and I've never even gotten close to breaking something. And warranties only cover manufacturer faults anyway. If you are a moron like me and hit 20foot jumps and hit a tree your warranty isn't going to cover it. Just put your bike on insurance and your are cover completely. Its simple. TGIF. i clearly need a weekend:)

I bought a Giant XTC which was less than 6 months old for basically half price. You were still able to walk into Giant shops and the same bike was still on the floor. The new models wasn't even out yet.

It comes down to how long do you want to advertise the bike or do you want a quick sell. (same as property) if your price is right it will sell if you want to make money (or loose less) you must play the waiting game.

I've seen some ridiculous prices for second hand bikes where people bought a 20k bike new and rode it twice didn't like it and now advertising for 18k.

There is an XTC on the classifieds here which i have been eyeing for a while. I first made contact with the seller in September, saying no offence but your price is too high, wanted 23k for a a bike that was 28k new. I made an offer for less which he refused (yeah it was quite low though) but he was adamant he is not going to drop his price further.

So the bike is still for sale and if he was only a bit more negotiable he would have had cash in the bank already.

It's not about that. If you look at giant trance 27.5.they sell 2nd hand for almost retail because everyone wants them. The market dictates the price. Diamonds, gold... The more there are flowing into the market the less the value. Pyga is another example. Guys sell them for 1 or 2k less than retail and people buy them because everyone wants one.

You cannot claim for a manufacture defect under insurance, there needs to be an event that caused the damage, normal use would not count.

That being said, riding with my brother I am almost guaranteed an insurance claim once a year. Ha ha

It's only cyclists that understand why we would pay so much for bicycles. My latest bike I paid 28k on special (normal price new was 40k). Whenever someone (who doesn't cycle) asks me how much it was and I tell them, I usually get responses like WOW AND YOU STILL HAVE TO PEDAL? OR DOES IT HAVE AN ENGINE IN?? That's when I tell them my bike is still relatively cheap..

But damn it makes a huge difference from my old 10k HT. And you can't explain those sort of things to a non cyclist.

BUT, not all of us are millionaires, and it becomes really difficult to justify to your family why you want to spend so much of your hard earned cash on another bicycle..

Its a good debate, and I agree, you cant explain the benefits to a non cyclist.  You shouldn't have to. A mate of mine has about 200K worth of fishing reels in his garage.. I don't get it.... he does.... luckily I don't have to get it.

There are some okes here who will drop 100K on a watch while someone points out the time on a cell phone.. to each his own.

One of my directors used to cycle but like 15 years ago and the other day he mentions he wants to get back into cycling.

So he asks me to keep my eyes out for anything for him, i say cool whats your budget, he thinks and says ja he does not really want to spend more than maybe 2k on a bike.

I laughed and said he must go to Makro. Angry he asks what do i mean, i said i have a mid range bike and mines insured for 30k.

He has since dropped the idea of getting back into cycling.

True, but not EVERYONE wants to ride a Pyga!
